Ty Segall – Emotional Mugger Review
Ty Garrett Segall is a prolific garage rock musician based out of California. Ty Segall has been one of my personal favorite musicians for a while now, ever since high school really. I first got into bands like FIDLAR or Bass Drum of Death, but then I heard Ty and didn’t really go back. All of Ty’s albums are good in my opinion, only a select few are great. Reverse Shark Attack, Goodbye Bread, and Melted are great. Emotional Mugger is spectacular.
Emotional Mugger is the best album Ty has done in my opinion. Emotional Mugger is a challenging album from start to finish, the guitars on “Candy Sam” and “Diversion” are so fuzzed out and so loud that they take the songs over. It’s really cool to see how much Ty has progressed in his production choices over the years. Candy Sam’s chorus is topped off with a fuzzy synth lead that follows the notes that the guitar is playing and it takes the song in this totally new direction. Upon first listen I was floored by how experimental and noisy this album is, I also saw similarities between this album and Goodbye Bread. Goodbye Bread shares a few qualities with this album, the song California Hills could have easily been on Goodbye Bread, a version of California Hills that matched the production style.
Along with this 11 song LP, Ty released a short film. The short film is really just an extra thing to go along with the LP but it’s worth the watch, Ty redid all the songs on the album for the short film so it’s a very interesting watch. I went to see Ty play live in Asheville in February of 2016 ( i think it was February not totally sure) and it was one of the best shows I’ve been to. Ty played Emotional Mugger in full then finished the show off with some old songs. Please go see Ty Segall play if you like this album, you will not regret it.
