After months of speculating on Jon Snow’s fate, we finally have our answer…
Not really. He’s still dead. But this still doesn’t seem like the end for the former Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. We’ll have to keep an eye out for Edd, who snuck off to find someone who can help Davos and company with their sticky situation at Castle Black.
Melisandre, who everyone expected to resurrect Jon Snow, still had a big episode as the titular character. You know, because she's about 600 years old As soon as the Red Woman takes off her necklace she apparently becomes Betty White’s great grandmother (which makes that demon she birthed to kill Renly even more impressive because menopause). It’s going to be interesting to see what she can conjure up for the members of the Night’s Watch who turned on Jon Snow. It looks like Davos is more than ready to unleash her creepy magic upon Allister and his cronies, which could lead to some potentially gruesome deaths. The people I’m most concerned with right now, however, are my friends who thought the Red Woman was really hot before this episode. Psychologically, there’s no coming back from being attracted to a woman a few centuries older than your grandma.
There’s a lot more going on in the premiere than staring at Jon Snow’s corpse though. For example, we got to see Sansa and Theon get captured by Ramsay’s men just long enough for Brienne and the real MVP of Westeros, Podrick, to come slay them. In a shocking turn of events, Sansa made an intelligent decision for the first time by accepting Brienne as her protector. Hopefully having Brienne by her side will allow Sansa to take revenge on the multitude of people who have wronged her. It’s about time things start looking up for the oldest Stark woman.
Daenerys might have the most interesting storyline going right now, something that hasn’t been said about her in a long time. She hasn’t been particularly interesting in the past two or three seasons so the idea of her being sent to Vaes Dothrak could really change the dynamic for the Mother of Dragons. I have a feeling she’s going to end up how she always does: with an even bigger army. Everywhere she goes, she convinces people to join her, and enlisting the help of the Dothraki might be just what she needs to take the iron throne. In the meantime, it’s up to Tyrion to hold down the fort for her in Mereen to make sure she still has followers when she gets back.
Cersei and Jaime’s scene made it pretty clear they’re about to go on a reign of terror against everyone who has messed with them – a list longer than the fifth Harry Potter book. On the first page of their burn book are probably the homicidal Sand Snake women of Dorne who poisoned Cersei's daughter and and stabbed just about everyone else. Let’s not forget about the High Sparrow, Lancel Lannister and everyone else in the Westorosboro Baptist Church. Their nude walk antics are going to lead to some serious retaliation form the Lannister clan. I expect the Mountain, who has been reincarnated as Bane from the Batman and Robin movie, to do some serious skull crushing in the name of the Queen. I’m also looking forward to an awful death for the “Confess” lady.
Oh, by the way, Arya’s blind and apparently that doesn’t disqualify her from having to fight on the street with a stick.
Overall, this is a really strong premiere and it sets season six off on the right foot. The Melisandre reveal at the end of the episode certainly builds momentum moving ahead.
