Magic

You know that feeling when you find a new artist, singer, actor, sports player, or any type of public figure that just resonates with you? You make it a point to follow all that they put out or do. That feeling is one of my favorites! A couple years back, music changed for me forever because of one artist. His name is Gallant.

I was working a landscaping job I had in the summer of 2016, and I always had music playing on my phone. I had just recently downloaded the music streaming app, Tidal. Tidal had a feature that listed all new music that came out recently. I would usually just hit play and let the songs keep going.

One bright and sunny day at the beginning of that summer, I was outside working, and an interesting song came on my phone. It was called "Weight in Gold". I heard the introduction and I was intrigued.

When he started the first verse, I knew that I loved his music! The beat paired with the guitar riffs just melted together throughout the entire song. His signature falsetto, breathy voice glided and cascaded over every note! I put it on replay for the rest of that day.

I have always loved to show my favorite artists to friends and others that I know, but when I show people Gallant, it makes me so happy! I will never get tired of his music. I couldn't possibly choose one thing that is unique about him because he embodies individuality. His lyrics and concepts are out of this world!

I am a huge fan of heartfelt and unconventional lyrics. One of my favorite lines from his song, "Talking to Myself," goes, "I'm a moss-covered stone on a foothill, and I'm tumbling. Tumbling." I relate so much to his strange metaphors about life. I'm overjoyed when he releases new music because it means I have new lyrics to learn.

The actual music to his lyrics is also very impressive. I've never heard many of the sounds or styles he pairs in his music. The way his songs flow into each other so effortlessly, it soothes the soul. He has music for anything that you are feeling. I can listen to his voice when it feels like I have none, and he brings me right back.

Gallant's presence is also very distinct. He prides himself on not fitting into any mold of an artist. He is his own artists, and he is true to himself. I am glad that he won't change.

October 27, 2018, I was supposed to see him in concert and meet him. Earlier today, I checked my email and there was an email from the venue saying that he canceled to tour because he isn't ready. I shed a tear on the inside. He is one of my favorite artists of all time, and now I have to wait longer to meet him.

After reading the email, I checked a few different websites to see if it was true. He left a message for his fans consoling us and letting us know that he's releasing a mini album sometime this month. Well, Gallant, I will be waiting on the edge of my seat! I cannot wait to hear what you have in store for us!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
