Dear future me,
Hey.
I’ve never written a letter to myself, so I figured I’d take a shot at it. It is currently 12:49 a.m. on a Tuesday night (or morning). Why am I still awake? Not sure, but this is pretty normal for me. The semester is finally coming to a bittersweet end, and I could not be happier about it. Although these past few months of spring semester have flown by faster than I thought, I am so ready to take on the summer.
I’d like to send this letter to myself all the way to the year 2020. That’s about four years away from now. I’m curious as to what I’m up to. Do I have a job? Am I living alone in my own fancy apartment? Do I have a cat? What about a dog? Have I found myself a nice boyfriend who buys me things...or am I sending flowers to myself on Valentine's Day pretending they’re from my secret admirer (I’ve definitely never done that before).
OK, on a serious note.
Dear Anna,
I hope you have found happiness. I hope that you are out there chasing your dreams and never accepting the word “no” for an answer. The world is cruel and people can be really horrible, but remember to keep your head held high. It’s so important that you remember to stay true to who you are and never lose sight of what matters to you. Remember to pray every day because God is so good. Don’t forget to thank Him for all that you are fortunate with, and pray even when things aren't going great.
I hope you still go out of your way to help others. I can’t imagine what it must be like outside of school, living on your own and supporting yourself. It is probably easy to get caught up in the stress of work life, bosses, and stupid things like traffic on the way to work. Don’t let these things distract you from the good. Continue to strive and work hard to see the good in people. Don’t give up on giving others second chances, but be wary when it comes to giving third and fourth chances.
Remember to take a little time out of every day and think about all the good things going on in your life. Don’t let your anxiety bring you down because there are way more things to be happy about than to be anxious about. Think of five positive things before falling asleep at night, and five encouraging thoughts before breakfast.
Don’t let anyone get you down with his or her unhappiness. Life is too short to constantly try and please others. Make yourself happy and do what you want because no one else knows how you feel, nor do they walk in your shoes.
Never take a day for granted because life is unpredictable. Do one thing every day that takes you out of your comfort zone. Even if this thing is as small as telling a stranger they have a nice smile! You never know whose day you’re going to make.
To keep this short and sweet, remember to smile because life is beautiful. I hope that years from writing this letter, I have found my happiness and use this letter as a reminder to be thankful for everything.
Love,
Me
