As we approach the middle of summer, we begin to feel bored more often. For those of us who work, we enjoy doing fun activities on our time off, but cry at the hours of work that translates into the money we spend when out. Luckily, breaking the bank isn't always necessary to have a fun time! Here are some ideas on fun things to do this summer while saving a few bucks.
1. Free Concerts
Summer is riddled with music festivals, but they are often expensive and require staying multiple days, which equals spending money on food and accommodation. If you keep tabs on your favorite artists on social media, you may find they post about special events. I was able to score four free tickets to a Gwen Stefani concert in San Diego, California because I happened to see a tweet from her announcing the show. While I did spend money on gas and food, it was a lot less than if I had purchased tickets to a show.Thank you internet!
2. Hiking
While summer usually means it is unbearably hot outside, hiking is still doable if you head out early in the morning or if you live somewhere that stays relatively cool. I live in a desert, so most days are in the 100's, but I was able to visit a hidden gem in the Coachella Valley by keeping an eye on the weather and getting on the trail as soon as it opened. I also chose a hike that wasn't too straining and that had the pictured waterfall in the middle, which allowed for time to rest and cool off before finishing the hike. Although hiking can be a fun way to get outdoors, it's important to stay hydrated, keep cool and look out for dangerous wildlife. If you don't know of any good trails in your area, try doing a quick Google search, tons are bound to show up!
3. Dive In Movies
Many hotels and aquatic centers have dive in movie nights at little to no cost! This is a fun way to escape the heat and watch a movie without movie theater prices. Most pools will provide floaties for you to use or you can bring a towel and sit on the deck. Another bonus is they will probably hand out free popcorn and have other snacks available for purchase. A great way to find out about these events is to contact the hotel or aquatic center directly or to follow your local newspaper on social media, they always post about fun events!
4. Take Advantage Of Hotel Pools
If you live somewhere that has a lot of hotels *cough* *cough* Palm Springs, then they are bound to have pools. They are typically easy to get into and are great if you don't have a pool. Even if you do have a pool, getting your friends together and pretending you are hotel guests is a little more fun!
5. The Beach
A classic summer pass time, the beach is a great getaway. Some of us are lucky enough to live right by the beach, but if not, the trip doesn't have to break the bank. If you and your friends plan it right, you can split the cost of gas and hit the grocery store for snacks instead of eating at restaurants.
6. Beach Bonfire
If you do live by the beach and it is legal to have a fire, you have a perfect summer night in your hands! Visit a local grocery store and ask if you can have any wood palettes they don't need (free wood!). Have your friends bring one food item and you have an inexpensive, fun night.
There really isn't an excuse for being bored this summer or not being able to go out and have some fun due to finances. There's so many fun things to do regardless of where you live, all it takes is a little research and planning! Happy Summer!
