Guess how I spent my first college spring break? Was it a wild trip to the beach, did I backpack through Europe, or did I take a week long cruise to Mexico? Actually, it would be none of the above. I’m a freshman at a huge party school, and I skipped out on my freshman year spring break, and honestly, I don’t regret it.
Whenever you think of college, spring break is one of the first things that pops into your mind. Movies always portray spring break to be this wild and exciting time where everyone takes beach trips and drinks entirely too much and spends the next week or so recovering. I’m not going to lie, a lot of people from my University spent their spring breaks doing just that. And if that is what you did, I’m glad you had fun and we’re safe, but to those of you who are thinking about skipping out on your freshman year spring break, I promise it will be okay if you do.
So what exactly did I do with my week off from class? Well, I spent a week with my family, friends, and boyfriend. I stayed up late, slept in even later, and consumed maybe just a tad too many calories. I spent time going to the movies, celebrating family member’s birthdays, and going on much-needed dates with my boyfriend. I cleaned the house, did some homework, and laid on the couch for hours while scrolling through Instagram looking at everyone else’s spring break pictures.
Being away at college for weeks at a time can be hard, and there are a lot of days I long to be at home with my family and boyfriend. Because of this, spending a week that I have off from class away from home just wasn’t appealing. I needed the week to catch up with friends, visit my home church, and spend some time with my siblings, boyfriend, and parents.

At the end of the week when it was time for me to head back to school, not once did I look back on the week and regret skipping out on my first college spring break. Instead, I was sad that the week was over because I wanted more time at home. So to the high school seniors who will be college freshmen next year or to the college freshmen who haven’t had their spring break yet, don’t feel like you’re obligated to go on crazy trips to the beach for seven days straight (unless of course, that’s what you want to do). Skipping out on my first spring break was a choice that I am so glad that I made.
