Standing in a one bedroom sized apartment with 100 people playing beer bong isn’t my idea of fun. But that’s just it, it’s not my idea of fun. Perhaps it's someone’s idea of fun and that is okay. We can have our own ideas of what's considered fun. I'm not better than you for saying no to the party scene and vice versa. It is just a personal opinion of what's fun.
My idea of fun is hanging out with a small group of people until 10:00 or 11:00 at night. We watch some Netflix, talk about life, eat crappy Chinese food, and then we go to bed. Not drinking with hundreds of people I don’t know, going to bed at 4 am, and waking up hung over. But again, if this is your type of fun, than by all means, go for it. I'm still having fun in college even though I don't drink.
What I’m trying to get at is that if you don’t drink in college, you are somewhat looked down upon. This is sad and somewhat confusing to me. I'm in college to get an education. Period. That is my first priority. I may sound like a stick in the mud, but this is my truth. Yes, of course, I am thrilled with the friendships I have made and continue to make. I'm having fun in the clubs I have joined and the exciting adventures that are ahead of me, but I'm here because I want an education. I’m here because I'm blessed that I have been given the opportunities that I have. I'm not saying that drinking means you are blowing all of your opportunities or not getting an education. I'm saying that I'm not focused on drinking every single night.
I want to live in a world where it's okay to not party or drink in college. I think it should be acceptable to say no to a drink and not feel pressured. I'm so thankful I found my friends who have the same opinions on drinking as I do. We definitely find our own fun and we never feel like we are missing out on any “college experience” by skipping the party scene.
