An Open Letter to my Mom

I love you Mom!

An Open Letter to my Mom
Mark Singer

Dear Mom,

I've been away from home for about six weeks now. And probably the hardest thing I've had to do was to leave you for the first time. You are the only one who's been there for me my entire life. You've helped me through everything, from my first day of school to my first breakup; from learning how to ride a bike to learning how to do laundry. You've provided everything I've ever wanted and more. I know that no matter what's going on back home, you're always willing to talk to me about anything at any time. I'm lucky enough to not only call you my mom, but my best friend.

I think we both knew that we were going to be close from the very beginning. I mean, I was born two weeks late! When I was finally born, I didn't want anyone else to hold me other than you. Fast forward sixteen years, and I almost never make a decision without asking your opinion first. You're the first person I turn to when I need help, whether it's about friend problems or about school stress. And you do the same with me. If you are stressed out from work or the book sale, I'm always the first one you talk to. I've always been appreciative of that. Even now, when I'm an hour away from you, I still call you almost every day. Heck, you spent the day with me yesterday and I called you today just to talk to you!

Thank you for being such an important person in my life. Thank you for staying up late with me and telling me stories about your childhood whenever I couldn't sleep. Thank you for taking time off work to drive me to competitions, therapy appointments, and friends' houses. Thank you for putting up with me for eighteen years and loving me, regardless of what happens. Thank you for letting me tag along to Special Olympics events, book sales, and work. Thank you for giving me every opportunity to succeed. Thank you for your unconditional love. Thank you for trusting me and thank you for being my best friend.

This doesn't even begin to explain how much you mean to me, mom. I love you so freaking much, you have no idea.

Sincerely,

Your (Hopefully) Best Friend

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
