7 Reasons Why You Should Be Friends With Your RA

You see all of these articles about the perks of living on campus, but what many of those articles fail to tell you, is that one of the best parts about living on campus is becoming friends with your RA (Resident Assistant)

RA's are meant to act as a source of stability for residents as we transition into this new phase of our lives. At first they can come across a bit scary, but in the end, they are students just like us just trying to get through college.

I moved in early for job training so I had extra time to get to know my RA. At first, I thought she was a bit weird, but I soon realized that we were going to be great friends.

Oh, by the way, this is my awesome RA Andrea:

Andrea really encouraged me to jump into the college experience and put myself out there. From guiding me through structured recruitment, helping me with late night study sessions, being my goto when I need someone to rant to, or someone to go on a TBell run with at midnight, she eventually became one of my greatest friends.

Here are 7 Perks of being friends with your RA!

1. You always have a food buddy

Even if it's 2 am, we'll both always be down to grab a taco or some chicken nuggets.

2. You always have someone motivating you

Whether it's to get you out of bed for your 8 am, going to the gym, or getting you to study, your RA will always be right behind you pushing you on.

3. You always have a study buddy

Studying with a friend makes studying a bit more bearable, plus you have someone to keep you on track.

4. Always having someone to hear you rant

Your RA actually cares about how you're doing and will offer good advice in return. When I feel like no one is in my corner, I can always count on my RA to be honest with me and bring me back to reality.

5. They always remind you to stay true to yourself

When you're a freshman in college, it's really easy to lose who you are. RA's will always remind you to stay true to your values and to not let anyone change you.

6. They always encourage you to try new things

RA's are definitely the Number 1 motivator when it comes to getting involved in groups and organizations on campus. My RA encouraged me to join Greek Life and now it's one of the best decisions I have ever made.

7. They make college feel like your home away from home

RA's definitely give off the mom and dad vibes. They're always so excited to see you when you get back from breaks and are always checking to make sure that you're eating, bathing, and not dying.

So shout out to my favorite RA Andrea who has become one of my most cherished friends. I appreciate everything you do, and I'm so grateful to have met someone as awesome as you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
