The internet can be a magical place where you can meet friends from virtually (and literally) anywhere. It removes a lot of the distance between you and whomever you end up befriending, as you can still contact each other using various messaging apps. You can even see each other using services like Skype and Facebook video chat. There's almost no limit to the things that you can do with online friends, other than actually being in the same place as them as you do these things.
The one thing that the internet can’t make up for is the physical contact that you get while in person. It’s different than dating relationships of course, but there are times when you really need a hug and the person that you’re talking to about the situation is hours away. Sure, there are people in town that I could go up to and give a hug and they wouldn’t question it, but they aren’t the person that knows exactly why I need the hug in that instance.
One of the best parts of these friendships is when you finally see them after a long while. During spring break I’ll be visiting a majority of the people that I can only talk to online because of how far away they are, and I couldn’t be more excited. Whatever we end up doing, I’ll be with some of the people that I see the least and probably care for the most.
