Friends always come and go, but it's the memories that will last a lifetime, that's how I always see it.
Throughout our lives, we always go through different friend groups, dealing with different types of people with different lifestyles and personalities that it's strange to know how we clicked in the first place. I don't even know how half of my friendships started, and yet I've had the same friends for many years! And I guess what makes that is by being a good friend. But what exactly does it take to be a "good friend"?
Well, a friendship is like a relationship, only without the baggage that you would bring into a romantic relationship (I'm not sure if that makes any sense. I'm on two glasses of wine and the topic of friendship came into my head).
And like a relationship, a friendship requires a lot of honesty. Every friendship, be it one-on-one or multiple groups of crazy friends who must be straight up with each other. When you're being untrustworthy with them, you're bound for some major trouble.
I wish that I was able to be 100% honest with my friends at times. When I was hiding about my sexuality, I longed to just trap all of my friends into one room and just blurt it out! Actually, that did happen during my second semester of college. But I couldn't say anything to my friends back at home until at least spring break and that wait felt like forever.
But then I think about the friends that I have lost over the years. Whether it be an actual problem, or it would just be over nothing and we would drift out separate ways. The latter is the one that hurts the most. You have so much in common with that person and you have been friends for years, and then all of the sudden you just drift apart. And the worse is that you're never given any closure for it. You just move on.
And sometimes you lose a friend because either they've changed, or you've changed. It's a hard argument to follow, as both parties put the blame on the other. If only we could resolve our issues and go back to the way things were in the beginning. Or maybe, you just didn't need that person in the first place.
So where am I getting at with this? Cherish every moment that you have with your current friends. You may think that you will be friends for life, and that is a possibility. But you may move on in your life and not have the same group of friends that you have right now. You may have a whole new group to make lifelong memories with.
And to the friends who have been lost, I always cherish the friendship that we had even if we don't talk that much anymore. I always wish my friends, past and present, the love and success in the future.
And in case you're wondering, I'm that drunk on wine mom friend of my group.
