To My Friend Who Is Not Returning Next Semester

It's not goodbye, it's only see you later.

To My Friend Who Is Not Returning Next Semester
Rebekah Anderson Barrett

I hope our last encounter was not the goodbye we shared in our hallway. I hope that my last sight of you is not of you carrying your things out of our freshman dorm for the last time. I hope we will share many more memories together, for I have treasured the ones we have had up to this point. You have been an amazing friend, unlike any other I have had in the past. You have been trustworthy and kind and always understanding of my quirks. You were my first friend my freshman year, and there is no substitute for that.

I was terribly saddened when I learned the news of your intent not to return next semester. I will miss you more than you will ever know. However, I know you are doing what is best for you, and I am so happy that you have found your way. You are so excited for the future, and as someone who loves you, I am so happy for you. I have never seen you so joyful, and for that, I am grateful. I want nothing more for you than a life full of contentment and blessings. I only hope that I will be there to share some of the memories with you.

You have been such a blessing in my life. I would not have survived freshman year without you. You helped me through so many tough days and nights and I honestly could not say that I would still be attending this school if it were not for you. You were one of the best things about freshman year. You were a consistent, every day kind of friend who was about as steady as a rock for me, even when you weren’t feeling so good about things yourself. I would like to say I was as good of a friend as you were to me, but we both know I wasn’t.

I wish I could have been a better friend to you. I wish I could have shown you the unconditional love and friendship that you had shown me. I hope that in the future, I have a chance to do so. I am so sorry I was not a better friend to you. I am sorry that I was not there for you on your worst nights. I wish I had been more aware. I wish I could change the past.

Now, I want to thank you for your unbelievable friendship. You have been one of the best friends I’ve ever had and I never expected to have a friend like you. I will never forget the example you set as a friend and I hope that this year was just the beginning. You made this year better than it should have been and a whole lot more memorable than it would have been without you. Thank you for everything. Things won’t be the same without you. However, I know you’re headed for some amazing things.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
