Being a freshman at Kennesaw State has it's many ups. Transitioning to college has been quite a fruitful journey in many ways, but there's a specific concern that I would love to bring to light. Don't get me wrong, it has been such a blast so far, but if you are a freshman like myself, we can all probably relate to one thing, Freshman Seminar sucks.
Us freshman have all become very familiar with this mandatory transition course that instead of being a good aid, it's served more as a waste of time. In the past weeks, I've had more work in that class than I've had in any of my other courses combined, it's ridiculous. While I know the intentions of the course are to ensure the successful transition of new freshman into college, it's done nothing but give students unnecessary stress and a heavier workload. Even worse, the work never pertains to something that's actually helpful or pertaining to a topic soon to be tested on.
Now, I have this class every Monday, Wednesday and Friday first thing in the morning for fifty minutes, and like everyone else I assume, I wake up and wonder "What exactly are we going to learn today?" Like usual, we don't ever really learn anything that could really help. Not so surprisingly, I learned a lot more on my own and from friends that have been in college than I've learned in Freshman Seminar. Get this, though, we did come to learn last week that most students that are undecided majors are more likely to drop out. I, myself am undecided at the moment, and I take no shame in it, but I do somewhat feel discouraged at the fact that this is something we learn. I can't speak for all the undecided majors out there, but I can speak for myself, I don't plan on dropping out.
To those that are also undecided, though, control what you can control but let God do the rest. He has a plan for you and whether or not that's revealed now or later, have faith in him because he will always remain faithful to us. Just keep doing you.
As for Freshman Seminar, I'm 100 percent sure the vast majority of freshman can get on without it. Your freshman year obviously calls for lots of guidance, but I've found the best way learn is place yourself back on track. What i mean by this is that, you sometimes have to get lost in order to find yourself. You don't have to take a class to learn how to be successful as college student, this might not be the same for all people but in my opinion, learn from the experiences, from the people and situations you encounter.
Freshman Seminar, though you are completely useless and waste of time, without you I wouldn't have been able to expose you for who you truly are.
