1. Small Classrooms = Being Present To Class
Thinking back to high school, I recall teachers saying things to their students about "when you get to college your professors don't care if you show up to class or not," which is FALSE! Every day this week that I went to class, my professors have said that they intend to take attendance no matter what. Now I guarantee going to a smaller school has an affect on this simply because of its smaller classes and less students, therefor making it easier for the professor to make time to take attendance.
2. Homework Overload
I just finished my first week at college and already the homework is crazy! Here's what I have to do already and it will increase as the year goes on.
English: Three page essay Due Wednesday and the rough draft due Monday :)
Mass communications: Make a New Twitter account, complete Chapter 1, and take quiz on the whole chapter :)
Statistics: Take lecture notes on several chapters and then prepare for an in-class quiz :)
Photography: Create a new website for building a portfolio, then write two blog posts including inspirational pictures that inspire me, take over twenty pictures, and be ready to discuss in class on Tuesday :)
Psychology: No homework! (yet..)
Oh, and did I mention NO LATE WORK EXCEPTED! Coming from high school and being able to make up excuses for not being able to turn in homework was always nice, but now it's the real world and if you don't turn something in on time, there goes your grade!
3. Time Management Is Major Key
I never really thought about how much free time I would have until this week, and I definitely will need to work on planning out doing homework, studying, eating, and even sleeping! I have a lot of free time now and know that without managing my time, i will get carried away and won't be able to focus on my studies. So it is very important that every week, maybe on a Sunday night, that you maybe write out your school schedule and your breaks in between classes. Ensure that you have designated studying time. Also, it's important to make sure that you are obtaining a healthy diet and drinking a lot of water. Most importantly, you need sleep! Of course students will say, " I don't need sleep" or " Yeah, I really don't sleep anymore." Trust me, while managing everything else, you need to set aside several hours of sleep a night, so that you don't fall asleep in class.
Hopefully in a couple of weeks I will be able to add to my list of " things I've learned from going to a community college," but that's all I have for now!
