Freshman 20 (Things I Learned This Semester)

My GPA won't matter in heaven right?

College is not what the movies make it seem like. You cannot just party every night, meet cute boys, and make friends instantly. College is harder than we perceive it to be. Here are 20 things I learned in my first semester.

1. College is a group of half children, half adults walking around pretending that we know what we are doing.

2. High school did not at all prepare me for the rigorous college courses.

3. Freshman 15 is not a myth, so hit the gym.

4. There is a doppelganger of pretty much everyone you went to high school with on campus.

5. You can never have too many t-shirts. T-shirt and norts will be your outfit of choice during those 8 a.m. classes.

6. If you don't like coffee you will get over that. Caffeine is a must.

7. Getting involved in on-campus organizations and activities is the best way to keep from getting homesick.

8. Call your mom. Just because she is not calling every 2 seconds does not mean she doesn't care about you or miss you. Call her or send her a text every once in awhile

9. Don't take naps longer than 30 minutes unless you want to wake up dazed and confused.

10. Don't wear cute shoes to tailgates because the mud and sludge will ruin them.

11. SEC football games are the most fun football games you could ever attend.

12. Take pictures whenever given the chance. You will want to remember these moments.

13. Do not procrastinate. This is not high school. You cannot procrastinate and get an A.

14. Cliques still exist in college.

15. The library is your home away from home.

16. Do not date the first person you meet. Enjoy college on your own for awhile.

17. Just because you are roommates does not mean you have to be friends. Just be cordial and coexist in your joint space.

18. There is a saying "C's get degrees" but do they really? Try harder than a C.

19. Never walk alone, especially not in the dark. Campuses can be very dangerous just like anywhere else.

20. Treat yo self. It is important that you have me-time in college. Take time to do something you enjoy. Watch a movie, read a book, eno outside, listen to music, write, dance, or sleep.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
