Yes, Brown University agreed that tampons and pads are just as essential as toilet paper, so they should be treated as such. Now all their bathrooms in academic buildings are stocked with them for free. And they do mean all. Even the men’s bathroom just to be inclusive to the transgender population on campus.
Brown is not the only one supporting the Free Tampon movement. New York City officials have announced a plan for this summer that would distribute free feminine hygiene products to public schools, homeless shelter and jail.
Being a woman is expensive. Period. I’m not talking about clothing and fashion trends. Every woman is forced to spend money on menstrual products. There is no other alternative. An average woman has to deal with a period each month from the age of 13 to 51. That is over 450 periods over the course of her life. Think about having to buy a box of tampons and pads for each of those 450 periods at around five dollars each. That isn’t even all of it. There is birth control, pain relievers and even just new underwear. Oh, and don’t forget that luxury tax added on to those tampons and pads.
Women need tampons and they shouldn't have to worry about it.
