Free Summer Fun

Want to enjoy yourself this summer but find that you’re a little strapped for cash? No need to worry, you can still have a great time this summer for free. Take advantage of these ideas to ensure you have a fun and thrifty summer.

1. Go to the beach.

The best part about living in California is our proximity to the beach. Whether it’s just for a quick swim or walk, or an all day event, going to the beach is always a good idea. Invite some friends, bring along a portable speaker and a Frisbee, and pack a snack and you’re good to go for a fun day in the sun.

2. Go hiking.

Be it a stroll in the sun or a grueling climb hit the trails for a nice day in the beautiful outdoors. Most areas have a website describing all the local trails to give you an idea of what best suits your needs. Distance, different aspects of the trail, difficulty level and tips are usually included on these websites, so make sure to do a little research to optimize you’re hiking experience.

3. Check for free movies or concerts.

Many towns host free concerts or movie in the park -- do some digging to check if your town participates in these events. Chances are your area, or one very close, offers free, fun events periodically.

4. Host a potluck.

Okay so this isn’t technically totally free -- but it’s pretty darn close. Having friends over is always fun, but it can get pretty expensive. A good alternative is to host a potluck. You can provide the main dish, but ask other to bring fruit, salads, side dishes, dessert, or drinks You get to catch up with friends, try new dishes and save money, it’s a win win win.

5. Have a picnic.

Take your average lunch up a notch by having a picnic with friends. Rather than going out to meet up, have everyone bring there own lunch and eat outside picnic style. It makes for a nice change and keeps you from racking up a huge restaurant tab.

6. Read a good book.

What better way to spend a nice summer day than in the sun with a good book? Rather than going out and purchasing the newest best seller head to the library or have a book exchange with your friends. That way you can get some new reading material without shelling out some major cash to support your literary habit.

7. Have a lazy weekend.

Need a break from work? Stay in this weekend and curl up with a good movie or new show. HBO offers a free month long trial with no strings attached, Netflix and Hulu both offer a week, and you can rent movies or seasons or TV shows from the library for free.

Whatever you choose to do, there is no need to break the bank this summer -- just think outside the box and you’ll be having a fun filled summer in no time.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
