Every fall and spring semester comes with rush for Greek life. You see dozens of articles, posts, and pictures about one thing: sorority rush. There is a lot that goes into sorority recruitment—the outfits, the conversations, the house, the philanthropy. One thing seems to be left out: that is recruitment week for the frats. Here are a few reasons why sororities during those two weeks of prep and rush dream of rush fraternity style.
No complex look-a-like outfits necessary. No makeup, no hair spray, no sticky boobs. No need to find the perfect pair of nude wedges or black preference night dress. Boys literally come in anything they want. The only rule they have to follow is not to be the dude who is way overdressed or that shmuck who looks like he just rolled out of bed. Just a polo and some khakis...*sigh*
No week of prep for rush. No practicing your walking, clapping, and singing all at the same time. No long seminars on how to speak to a PNM.
No small talk with limitations. Boys can say anything they want about girls, partying—literally anything and everything. Girls, on the other hand, have to take in details about the PNMs and evaluate what each different girl says.
No singing. Somehow sororities manage to basically dance, clap, and sing in four to five inch heels. No one wants to see some frat bro break out into song about his organization.
Boys can carry around a beer in hand during rush. Female recruitment there is usually no talk of alcohol or any kind of drugs whatsoever.
Fraternities will say "screw 'em, he wasn't ________ material" to the kids who do not come back to their house. On the other hand, over on the girl's side, a sister might be freaking out that her rush crush did not make it back for house tour.
Some sororities already have the okay to wear "frat cruisers"—those sweet little tennis shoes the frat stars rock. But sadly, my sorority included, it's pumps and wedges all week long ladies.
In the end, it all boils down to being yourself and not to act in some pretentious way. That goes for both fraternity and sorority rush. Even though fraternities are more relaxed, they still want great members that will make their chapter stand out and be successful. Find the place that is your forever home. No matter how girly that sounds, frats consider one another brothers for life. Greek life is one big group of mini families that you will always look back on and smile, no matter how strict or serious the rules and regulations are.
