Short films are underrated, which is a travesty, because they can pass on a great story in the span of under the time lapse of a standard full length movie. Being on Tumblr and scrolling around random YouTube suggestions helped me to find some of my favorite short films. In a nonspecific order, here are some of my favorites.
1. "Out of Sight" Directed by Yu Ting Ya, Ya Hsuan Yeh, Chung Ling
This is honestly one of my favorites on this list. The concept is simple enough, but seeing the world through the perspective of this little blind girl is fun and absolutely adorable. Everything that appears in the video is based off of what senses she odes have, rather than her eyesight.
2. "Poulette's Chair" Directed by Hiroyasu Ishida
There's a Ghibli-feel to this film, and it's because the character designer and animation director is Yojiro Arai, who worked on "From Up On Poppy's Hill" and "The Secret World of Arietty." It's an endearing video that will have you feeling for-- a wooden chair. (Yes, you read that correctly. Prepare for unexpected nostalgia to that one chair you always sat in as a kid.)
3. "High Tide" by Kristen Kemper
I have had the pleasure of meeting Kristen Kemper at Otakon, an anime convention that takes place in Baltimore, where she was selling prints of this short. It has a nice blend of fantasy and everyday life, inspiring a sort of magical feeling viewers are left with at the end. Plus, it features Kemper's awesome art style (which you can see more of, because she has a webcomic! Sylvania updates every Tuesday and Thursday.)
4. "¡Hola Llamigo!" by Charlie Parisi and Christina Chang
I really like this short, and it's not just because of the fun idea of it-- my friend from high school's sister made it! Christina Chang's artwork is always my favorite, especially seeing her and my friend at conventions. She's also a story artist for "We Bear Bears," a show on Cartoon Network (I didn't know that till now!).
I would love to add more, but I don't have the names of the creators (thanks, people uploading to YouTube without permission) and some of them have content that isn't entirely theme-appropriate (most of these films are lighthearted). If you're interested in anymore, feel free to leave a comment and I can gladly send you some recommendations! If you're looking to find any more now, check out some of the projects that CartoonHangover has made. Aside from Bravest Warriors and Bee and Puppycat, they have other short videos with different characters and stories!
