Valentine's Day is all about love. People go on expensive dates, extravagant vacations and buy each other insane amounts of gifts. It's meant to be a holiday spent with your favorite person/people. For most people, it is one of their favorite days of the year. But not for me! Here are four reasons why I'm not a fan on Valentine's Day.
1. It's all fake.
I realize that Valentine's Day is a special occasion. It's like an international date night. However, to me, it's a day full of people faking their love for one another. If they aren't all you think about and if they aren't the love of your life the other 364 days of the year, why is valentine's Day any different? I don't think you should be together if you only fake like each and pretend to be in love only one day out of the year because that's what you're "supposed to do."
2. It's expensive.
People shell out hundreds, if not thousands of dollars all in the name of "love." According to CNBC, Valentine's Day is the third most expensive holiday in America. From jewelry to dinner, from flowers to chocolates, Valentine's Day may cause you to spend an entire paycheck in one day. Not to say that your partner isn't worth it, but they are also probably the same one to be upset when you can't pay your bills or for groceries the next week or for your gas. I feel like it's just a ploy to get us all to spend our money and further capitalist ideals rather than about actual love. It's all a production. Why can't people do things that are fun and inexpensive?
3. The crowds are insane.
If you try to go anywhere the weekend closest to Valentine's Day or the day of, you're basically going to be caught in traffic. Because everyone feels the need to go out and spend money on Valentine's Day, never try to go to any sort of restaurant or shopping establishment because there will be lines and crowds. And if you're anywhere near as impatient as I am, you will not enjoy that. So please, if you can avoid going anywhere on Valentine's Day, please do!
4. It's disgusting.
I may sound like the stereotypical single person, but that isn't it. I am just simply not a fan of overdone public displays of affection. Even when I have been in relationships, I have not been into PDA. So if I have had the respect not to be like that in front of other people, I expect the same amount of respect to be given to me. But I guess other people don't think like that. Public displays of affection are gross to me because I don't feel like you should have to go out in public and be all over your partner to prove you are in love to a world that doesn't really care.
Basically, Valentine's Day is fake and was manufactured by the government to make us spend money we don't have on people we don't love any other day of the year. So while you are out on your fake dates, I'll be in my room in my pajamas, doing my homework with a mug of hot chocolate.
