I Found Myself In Europe

How I Survived Living in Europe

I Found Myself In Europe

I moved from my comfortable home in Kentucky to a cute little town in Germany when I was 16 years old.

During my junior and senior years of high school, I traveled to nine different countries, over 20 cities, and had the time of my life. I was enthralled by the languages, cultures, and people of the world. I soon learned that every country is different and every country had something new to teach me about the world and about myself.

I learned not to be afraid of traveling. It was completely normal to hop on a train and ride to a new city on any given weekend. Our favorite places to visit were Regensburg, Rothenburg, and Trier. When we weren't riding the train, we would take a drive and go on a day trip to places like Prague. For someone who is a homebody by nature, this was an important lesson for me to learn. It's okay to get up and go somewhere, anywhere. I had to learn not to let the world intimidate me.

My favorite part of my European experience was the food, of course! We had crepes outside the Louvre in Paris, schnitzel at a family owned restaurant in Parsberg, and gelato in Venice. Every culture is thoroughly expressed in the food. It was almost as if you could taste the history, the authenticity, and the love of the culture in each bite.

In every country, there was history at every turn of our heads. Every building had its own story. In Paris, we saw Notre Dame and walked the Champs-Elysees. In Prague, we crossed the Charles Bridge and bought art and jewelry from local artists. And in Croatia, we lied on the beach and got to see the only doorway standing in the war torn city of Poreč in Croatia.

I think the most important thing I learned about myself was just not to be afraid to be completely immersed in the whole experiences. Without experiences, are we really living life? Not everything can be seen from the couch and until we moved, I realized that my eyes had not really been opened to what the world had to offer. Now, I can't wait to go back.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
