With the summer time, there usually comes a summer job for most students as well. I am no exception to this theory, for I work almost every day throughout the summer and even during the school year. Having to give up days of summer vacation to spend time behind a counter waiting on people can be a total drag. However, with the right company, any summer job can be just as fun and memorable as a vacation.
Luckily for me, the company at my job is great. There are three people in particular there (you all know who you are) in my age group. We know each other from high school. Since we all knew each other prior to working together, it made things easy and comfortable right off the bat. We don't have problems. We get along. We make an occasionally crappy environment a better one by continuously being there for each other. Without my coworkers, I would be lost.
One of my coworkers always has the best gossip. She knows everything about everyone. When it comes time for us to work together, gossiping is mainly all we do. You could say that this is really unprofessional, which it is, but it's what gets us through a shift. The customers laugh at us, and they know that when they come in we can tell them anything they want to know. We can talk about anything from people who have changed since high school to boy troubles to things the customers don't realize we know about them. Again, it's probably terrible, but that's us.
Another coworker of mine is someone I've been close friends with since probably middle school. He is genuinely one of the most bitter and unintentionally funny people I know. (He sounds awful, but I swear, he's a great guy.) Sharing a job with him is probably what has kept me in the same place for two years. I know that whenever I have a problem with a customer he will be there to back me up or take my side. Also, our complaining sessions about literally anything and everything around the store or in our lives generally are probably the best therapy one can receive.
Finally, the other girl I work with is a complete and total trip. I've known her since probably kindergarten. She's such a fun and lovely person to be around. Her jokes are dumb, yet silly and completely hilarious. Her laugh is contagious. When she's in the store with me, it's always a good time. I cannot count how many times we have laughed so hard we cried. Sometimes we pay more attention to each other than the customers in the store. Again, probably terrible, but that's how it goes. Work becomes an extremely bearable place when I get to work with her.
Overall, even when your job isn't the best or is just a place you go to make money to get you through school, you can make it great. Granted, all coworkers won't be the best, but there is always someone you can find the light in to make your job a little more fun to go to. I'm very thankful for the group I've got. You all are the best.
