Many of us will go through each day just repeating the same cycle, wondering what is our purpose in this life.
Day 1.
Inhale, exhale
Go to work, come home
Have a few conversations
Turn on the TV
Order things we don't need
Turn off the lights, call it a day.
Day 2.
Wake up, do it all again
Wonder what is the purpose-what am I even doing on this Earth
Dream of being made for something bigger
Goes back to work without purpose
Lost in a whirlwind of lies
Come home. Call it a day.
Day 3.
I think you get the point.
"Surely life is more than just work, come home, watch tv, shop aimlessly, sleep and do it again". I assure you it is more than this with God.
This is something I have always heard, that our purpose for this life lies in God's plan and working for His glory. To an unbeliever, this is nonsense and what is important is just the things we have on earth. Even I have struggled with this thought; thinking that the most important things in life are just family, friends, having a home, and being "well off" in life (who ever decided what "well off" was?). Anyways, this is what I used to think meant I had a "good" life. Maybe I am alone in this thought, but this seems to be a very shallow way to define the purpose of life-to think that life is solely significant based on our jobs/payroll, the amount of people we talk to, who takes the best selfies/who has the newest everything. Even having the most intentional relationships with people or volunteering every single day is all a loss without a motive behind it.
Being "good" can be a distraction when that becomes our standard of living. There is no motive to our "good" outside of God. As a Christian, my reason for loving and serving people is because God did it first.
The world has done a good job of distracting us from our one purpose. Covering it with the idea that money is what we need to survive or that the newest car or t-shirt will boost our status, we have absorbed this lifestyle that it is enough to just claim we believe in God, but we do not have to serve Him or live for Him. This is a contradicting lifestyle of distractions. The truth is, anything and outside of God is a distraction. I know for a lot of people it seems like this world and everything in it is it, that's all we'll ever be worth, but that way of thinking is so far from the truth. There is a God; There is a Heaven, and there is a Hell. There is an eternity after this earth.
"Do not love the world or the things in the world. 'If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world-the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life-is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever." 1 John 2:15-17
We were not put on this earth for a purpose so shallow as to be living for a new car or a job promotion. We were put on this Earth so that every person on this earth might hear the news of Jesus Christ and would come to know His love and want to tell others about it as well. When something so monumental happens to us, we should want to proclaim it and share it with others.
We get distracted by rejection and by everyday life thinking it is enough to just talk to someone-if we are not carrying ourselves in a way that reflects Jesus to people and telling them about Him, then there is no purpose. Each interaction we have with one another is an opportunity God has given us to share His news with those people, but we have fallen into this realm of complacency and have listened to lies that it is unacceptable to talk about God to strangers and that there's a time and place for it (the church building). To be frank, every time and every place is the perfect time and perfect place to tell someone about God.
It is absolutely crucial that we recognize the distractions in our lives and put an end to them. It is even more important that we share our faith. Rejection does not matter, God has given each of us our own special platform, whether that be as CEO, teacher, coffee shop worker, or even homeless on the streets. It is time to stop believing that God cannot use us where we are and that we have to wait for "that perfect timing". Each person we pass by without sharing His love is just one more person that may never get to hear about Him. We have to eliminate distractions and stop listening to lies; it is time to start being available and letting God be God and work in the lives of people we talk to. That is our purpose, that is why we work, that is why we volunteer, it is why we do anything. Anything outside of living for God and for His purpose, is a distraction. Do not follow the misleading road. Follow God's road.
