I have this problem where my eyes are bigger than my stomach, so I take more food than I can actually eat. But then all that extra food gets put into the trash. I've been getting better at eating everything on my plate and taking smaller portions, but sometimes it is hard because there are so many different options that look so delicious! Even though it is very important for people to not waste the food that they put on their plate, it's important for people to know where most of the food waste happens.
I'm sure you don't usually think about the food you buy in the supermarkets, whether its fresh fruits and veggies or a premade meal. You see it and you buy it. But that food travels very far and wide to make it there. However, many perfectly fine fruits and vegetables don't even make it to the supermarkets for you to buy. Why you may ask? For cosmetic reasons. A vegetable might be too small or too big to sell in the supermarkets. Or it just may not look like the "normal" potato that we know and love.
All of this produce that was grown but doesn't meet beauty standards gets thrown away. I don't know about you, but I don't care if something is oddly shaped or is too small or too big. It makes no sense why we would throw out all of this perfectly fine food that could be used to feed people. We actually over produce food, and that's why so much gets wasted, but yet there are still people starving. It makes no sense.
I am angry and frustrated at our society and how wasteful we are. I know sometimes I struggle with wastefulness, but I am trying to be better. I encourage all of you to try and make a plate for yourself and eat the whole thing, without feeling overstuffed. I hate to make this political, but there should be policies in place about this food waste issue, because it is out of hand, so I encourage you to talk to your senators or representatives and tell them that this is something that needs to change.
