Why You Should Eat On Black Friday Instead Of Shopping

Many people look forward to the day after Thanksgiving: Black Friday. They enjoy the sales stores offer, or even just want to get some of their Christmas shopping done. There are even the few that actually relish in the atmosphere of Black Friday – the chaos of products, the rush of people, the hectic vibe that radiates from the stores. Americans love Black Friday shopping.

I have never been shopping on Black Friday.

In the past 19 years of my life, I haven’t had any real desire to go Black Friday shopping. The shopping madness doesn’t exactly appeal to me. People that go nuts over getting 50 percent off on the latest, greatest thing isn’t worth it for me. While the sale may be great, I wouldn’t put my life in danger when the doors open at 4:00 am on Black Friday morning. Don’t get me wrong – it’s not a bad thing to be into Black Friday. I get it; some people thoroughly enjoy that craziness when shopping. But it’s not exactly my cup of tea.

I enjoy the Thanksgiving weekend. I like to spend time with my family while I’m on break, rather than spending it scouring through racks of clothing to find the best sale. Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on ourselves and be thankful for everything we have. We lose the meaning of Thanksgiving when Americans look forward to shopping the next day, or even going to wait in line to get the best TV Thanksgiving night.

The worst part about Black Friday is how out of control it’s gotten. Even though I’m really not that old, I do vaguely remember stores just opening early, somewhere around 4 or 5 in the morning. As the years have passed, stores are beginning to open earlier. We’ve gotten to the point where stores open on Thanksgiving night, ruining quality family time that may only happen once a year for certain people. This year, some stores are respecting the Thanksgiving holiday and won’t open during the crazy hours of Black Friday, such as Costco (opens at 9 am on Friday), Barnes and Noble (store hours vary), and TJ Maxx (opens at 7 am on Friday).

Overall, I’m not against Black Friday. I do think it’s a good time to get some Christmas shopping done. However, I don’t want Black Friday to ruin the reason for Thanksgiving and what the holiday is for. Black Friday is a Thanksgiving tradition for many, so maybe this year I’ll be adventurous and go Black Friday shopping!
