Lately, the public has been bombarded with a plethora of heartbreaking headlines that all highlight the growing effects of climate change, whether it's about vanishing habitats, the ocean's temperature, or erratic natural disasters. Our inability to catch-up with the visible effects of climate change (despite modern technological advancements) displays the severe monumental impact that consumerism has on the environment.
Social media carries a lot more weight in 2020 than it did a decade ago. It has become a platform for people of all ages to promote social change by exposing worldwide environmental issues. This type of instantaneous engagement could be incredibly powerful and overwhelmingly influential if used the right way.
This year should be a call to action for all social media users -influencers or not- to follow at least a handful of informative accounts that are trying to provide useful day-to-day techniques for reducing our carbon footprints.
Needlessly scrolling through your feed and liking every other "eco-friendly" post is so meaningless in comparison to the reality of our environmental crisis. While glaciers are melting, forests are burning to ashes, and entire ecosystems are disappearing right before our eyes, most of us are busy creating content or using our different social media platforms to find cooking recipes, connect with friends, and try out the latest lip injection filters.
Don't get me wrong, indulging in those guilty pleasures every once-in-a-while is not the issue here. However, choosing to become limited by them and merely consuming the superficiality of it all is incredibly irresponsible. Climate change action is in our hands, so be careful in not letting an initiative drown in the chaos of your feed.
