Follow Your Dreams, Not A Job. You will be glad that you did.
This is the statement that I will leave with my fellow grads. I am graduating next week and I am bittersweet excited. And I am pretty sure kids/adults(I know it's hard to believe we're about to enter the real world in adulthood), across the country are graduating in December.
Some students already has a job lined up. Other kids are going to graduate school. And other kids well may just go back and live with their parents. And then they are people like me. It is the people that does not know where there next career move is going to be, but knows what type of career move they want to make.
The only question is, how do we get there? I am here to say that it is ok if you do not have concrete plans after graduation. It may cost you a date with a girl, considering a sufficient income to support her. But then again women get mad at men for everything. Sooner or later they will find out what they are missing on. But it is the end of the road for any student, who does not know where to go.
You have to find your passion, not just a placeholder in your schedule. 9 to 5's are overrated. I mean sure you can make a decent living, enroll in that 401K plan, possibly get a promotion and then go home, to see what else is there to do. You can rot your life away because of a job that will not move you to any place that you want to be. If it makes you happy, then I guess you want to live a dull life. But I want people like myself and others to follow your dreams. Put some deep thought to this because I am confident you guys, reaching your full potential and accomplishing your goals.
There are bigger things in life than a job. However, I do understand that if you have to work to make ends meet, support your family, or pay off student debt, then I understand thoroughly why you are, where you are at. But do not let that be the final destination. As a great one once said(Drake), "life's about the journey to the destination." Just because you are working that fast food job, 9 to 5 entry-level job or late at night third shift job, does not mean it is the end of the road for you.
It is up to you to position yourself for your next move.
If there is one thing I wish I would have done better in college, is to network myself better. Who knows where I would have been. I would probably have a job lined up, be moving to a different state, and not constantly talk about how women need to give me a chance or do better in my articles. But it is not too late. It is never too late. It may be for college, but not for life. And every person who is reading this article has the potential to change the world.
Do not let another person's "so-called advice" impede you from reaching your desired destination. They do not have the power to say where you are going to go. Only you, and God of course. I want you guys to have a chance to speak with your heart, and find out what energizes you, excites you, and that thing you would do for free every day. Then, go out and make it happen.
Take it by the horns, make it yours. It is going to be scary. But life is scary. It is not supposed to be easy. More importantly, as you follow your dreams, make sure you find yourself first. Finding yourself will propel you to position yourself for that great dream. In turn, that dream will become who you are, not what you do.
