We all have that one friend we’ve known our entire lives. Maybe you met in kindergarten, or maybe your parents were friends before you were born. Either way, you’ve been friends longer than you haven’t been friends, and that’s saying something in this day and age. Where new friends came and went, your old bestie has always lurked in the background; probably sleeping in your bed or stealing all your food. Here are five ways to tell your friendship is one for the ages.
1. You Don't Mind Doing Nothing Together.
Sometimes when you guys hang out, that’s all you do. You and bestie #1 don’t really even have to be doing anything to be having a good time. Maybe you’re reading a book on the floor and they’re scrolling through Facebook on the bed. Regardless, you’re having a great time just sharing the same space.
2. Your Family Is Their Family and Their Family is Your Family.
You all know the drill. You come over unannounced and let yourself into your friend’s house like you’ve been living there for years, because really, you have. You call “Hey, Mom” when you walk through the living room and see your friend’s mom sitting on the couch. She just waves because she’s seen it all before. The same thing happens at your house when your friend comes over.
3. You Can Be Completely Honest With Them.
This applies to anything. When you go shopping there’s no awkwardness in telling your friend that maybe that isn’t their best look. They feel comfortable telling you you’ve obviously bought way too many books or video games and that you need to sort out your priorities. And if you see them giving the side-eye to some weirdo, you don’t hesitate to tell them they need to have higher standards (although, no one can really meet your standards when it comes to them).
4. You Can Turn Anything into a Funny Situation.
This also applies to anything. You literally be getting arrested and turn it into a joke. You could be getting lectured in class when you look over and make eye contact with your friend, and suddenly that lecture is the funniest thing you’ve ever heard in your entire life. Maybe you narrowly escape death for the hundredth time driving home with them and at this point, what else can you do but laugh?
5. No Matter What, You'll Always Be Friends.
This is the big one. No matter how much time you spend apart, whenever you reconnect it’s like no time passed at all. You can fight and argue all you want, but when it comes right down to it, they’re the one you call in the middle of the night when you’re drunk and you need a ride home. You know you can count on them for anything. You love them so much you can’t imagine a life without them, because where would the fun in that be?
Pro tip: Give your friend a call tonight. I’m sure they’d love to hear from you.
