Need extra spending money this summer? Look here for some ideas on how to earn bonus cash.
It’s officially summertime. And you’re officially broke. After spending all of your hard-earned cash throughout the school year on taxi rides, late night food and Greek life events, you’ve never seen your bank account this empty. But have no fear! Before you land that awesome internship in the city, here are five easy ways to gain some extra spending cash this summer so that you won’t be forced to lurk into your parents’ wallets.
1. Save up your coins. This sounds a bit obvious, but most people don’t realize that saving up the extra change from all of your cash purchases can really lead to a lot of extra dough. Get yourself a good ol’ mason jar to leave in your room after coming home from shopping and you’ll find that all of your extra change starts to add up quickly. Before you know it, you’ll have enough coins to cash in for an extra tank of gas, which is a serious necessity for the summer months.2. Sell old stuff on Ebay. I have never been an avid Ebay user, but after discovering how easy it is to make money through selling old things online, I have completely changed my mind about this website. Everyone always has a bunch of old things they have hardly used or do not use anymore, most of which are jewelry or fashion items that have once been trendy, but gone out of style. You can set the bidding price based on similar items and charge the buyer for shipping. It’s a super easy way to rack up a ton of cash, depending on how much extra stuff you have lying around!
3. Babysitting. Now that you’re home from college, hit up the families you used to sit for during high school and let them know you’re around for the summer if they need an extra hand. Babysitting is an easy way to make cash and the best part is you get to choose your hours. Another way to find families who may need your help is to sign up for websites like care.com and sittercity.com. These websites allow users to create a profile and apply for various babysitting and caregiver jobs in their local areas. You can even find families who need full time nannies for the summer, and turn your occasional babysitting into a serious full time job.
4. Work freelance. If you’re not too good with kids, but have other some other skills you want to earn cash for, you can sign up for websites like elance.com and odesk.com. These websites allow you to sign up and find freelance jobs posted by others. The jobs can range from big or small, short or ongoing and individual or team-based work. If you’re good at writing, help someone out and write a blog post for them. If you’re good at super technical things like software development, you can take on a big job that would rack in some serious dough. The best part is, most of these jobs are all online and you get to choose what work you would like to do.
5. Etsy. So, if you aren’t really good with kids, and you’re trying to stray away from computer work, here is one last option for you: Etsy.com. For those of you who who enjoy crafting, Etsy is a website where you can sell anything of yours that you’ve made: jewelry, clothing items, phone cases and bags are just a few of the things you can sell or buy on this website. For the inspiring fashion designer, artsy friend, or crafty big, this is the place for you. Who knows, you could end up starting a successful business this summer with only the intentions of selling your creative homemade items for some extra money.
