It’s August, which means you’ve moved into your new place to start school again. You have been looking forward to this since you left in May and you cannot wait to get this year started . Move in day is the most stressful day of your life because you want to get settled and you want your new place to look and feel as homey as possible. For a lot of you, you have roommates and combing your stuff with theirs is a lot harder than you thought. Here are five thoughts you might have had while moving in:
1. “Wow….I have so much stuff.”
You never realize how much junk you actually have until you unpack it and have to find a place for it. When I unpacked a box and found another box full of random things that belong in a junk drawer, I thought to myself, “why do you even have this?” The worst is when you have to share with your roommate, and she has an equal amount of junk as you do. Finding a space to put everything you need is such an issue.
2. “I want my room to be cute, but I’m too poor.”
Honestly, guilty as charged. Do you understand how much cuter your room would be if you had more money? You spent all summer thinking about how you’re going to dress up your room and organize everything in a perfect way but now that you’re here, that just takes too much effort. You see decorations that you want for your room but they're just too expensive. Your room is a perfect representation of who you are and you are going to be spending a good majority of your time here, so you want to make it as comfortable as possible. Decorating is 75 percent of the work but 95 percent of what people will see when they first come visit.
3. “I promise I will use this desk for homework.”
The lie you always tell yourself every single year and yet in five days it’s covered in makeup and clothes and used more as a storage space than for actual work. The only time you will see the top of your desk clean is move in day.
4. “Okay, I HAVE to stay organized this year.”
You organize your entire apartment in such a perfect way that you don’t want to mess it up. You color coordinate your clothes, you have a designated place for your backpack and you promise to make your bed every day. It’s fine, everyone says this. But you know that in two weeks, your clothes' home will be on the floor, your backpack will be somewhere random and your bed will never be made.
5. “I love college.”
Through it all, this year will be amazing. College is for finding yourself, preparing for adult life, having fun, and (oh yeah) learning. No matter what, this year will be legendary. Whether your apartment is cute and comfortable or not at all, you will make a million memories and your new place will definitely be hard to leave when the year is over.
