Five Things My Mom Was Right About

Five Things My Mom Was Right About

If I could go back a couple years, I would have listened to the wise words often preached by my mother. Little did I know, this advice would now actually be relevant to my life. As many tweens act, while going through their 'I know everything' phase, I thought my mom had no idea what she was talking about because she was “too old." However, looking back, she was one hundred percent right about every single thing, especially these five in particular.

1. Stay away from boys.

Throughout the years, I have learned one thing from boys. They are no good. Your teenage years and college years should be spent creating memories that will last a lifetime, not wasting your time worrying about heartaches from brainless boys. She always told me this, and now I sure as heck wish I would have listened.

2. Don't stay up late.

I don't know about most people, but I thought pulling all nighters was the coolest thing to do when I was growing up. Now an all nighter is a dreadful activity that is not spent gossiping with my best friends, but rather at the library. My mom was definitely right about sleep being essential for a healthy and happy lifestyle.

3. Don't buy things you don't need.

While shopping, my mother always asked, “Do you really need that?" My response was always the same, “abso-freaking-lutely, “ even if I had the exact same thing in a different color. I wish I had saved my money instead of buying my fifth Abercrombie moose shirt.

4. Dress appropriately.

This is probably the smartest thing my mother ever taught me. Causing attention to myself through skimpy clothing is never a good idea. You should get people's attention through your intelligence, personality, and the other attributes that make you, YOU.

5. Focus on your grades.

I never really realized how important grades are until applying to college. I always tried my best throughout high school, yet when trying to get into colleges, I always wished I had tried a little harder. Grades are a top priority and should be the focus of your school, before the fun stuff.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
