Growing up with a Korean mother is always a tough thing to do, but somehow we Korean children always persevere. One of the things that my mom always, no matter what, commented about was her opinion on Japanese people. Ever since the Japanese invasion of Korea, the Japanese always had a bad wrap with the Koreans. Here are just some of the things that you might hear from a Korean. Now, I do not agree with these items below; I totally love Japanese stuff and appreciate their culture.

1. Japanese people are all greedy.

Now this stereotype comes from Japanese imperialism back in the 1930's, and even today. The Japanese invaded Korea and took all our land from us, and once they lost, they still want to take our land. Korea has these little islands called the Dokdo Islands, or according to the Japanese, the Takeshima Islands, claiming that the islands are within the Japanese Sea, meaning that whatever is in that sea belongs to the Japanese, apparently. The Koreans argue that the Dokdo Islands have been Korea's even before the war, and so belong to the Koreans, also including that the sea isn't the Japanese Sea, but instead, the East Sea. The whole thing is complicated really.

2. All Japanese people play games.

Koreans recognize that Japanese people are the champions of creating games, and so believe that Japanese have no life but playing video games. This is quite ironic because today you see that many Koreans just play games all day.

3. Japanese people are racist and xenophobic.

This stereotype also comes from Japan, in which the Japanese tried to implement an all Japanese race in Asia, following the Yamato Race, and hating all other Asians. They also say this because, in the past, the Japanese would never accept anyone in their country, just because it seems like they hate everyone.

4. Japanese people are all weird.

Whenever Koreans see some advertisement or music from Japan, they always assume that the end result is something really, really weird. Koreans like to make things cute and cuddly while Koreans also think that all Japanese take cute things and make them weird, like a grown woman being portrayed as a young girl, or depicting great Japanese generals as girls.

5. Japanese people are really into sex.

Koreans tend to believe that Japanese people love sex, 24/7, every minute of the day. They tend to base this on what they see in Japanese entertainment, lots of sex ads and suggestive stuff.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
