Five Reasons Working For The Odyssey Can Benefit You

1. You'll learn how the media works.

No matter what field you plan on going into, knowing how the media works can be extremely helpful. By working for a news publication, you'll learn what kinds of things the media focuses on, how to communicate with the media and the standards that the media strives to follow. That can help you to get your work in college and in the future the attention that it deserves, no matter what profession you're in; take the fear out of talking to the press; and teach you how to advocate for yourself when media coverage of you or something you're involved in isn't all that it should be.

2. You'll get to help cover an important and often poorly reported on part of the college life.

While it's not hard to find headlines pointing out the negatives of Greek life, getting the whole story from the media can be tough. By being part of a publication that focuses on Greek life, you'll get to help tell the whole story, including all the good things that Greek organizations are involved in, like philanthropic efforts. Also, Greeks sometimes have perspectives that you just won't find elsewhere. The Odyssey works to share those.

3. You'll gain experience and clips to help if you want to pursue a career in journalism.

If you're interested in getting involved in journalism, working for a campus publication is a great way to learn the basics. You'll learn how to format a story and journalism ethics. You'll also get experience with journalistic writing and gain work samples. For almost any internship at a professional publication, they'll want you to have at least a few solid clips, knowledge of journalism basics and recommendations from people familiar with your journalistic work. The Odyssey can help you get that.

4. You'll find out if journalism is for you.

While journalism might seem glamorous, it really can be tough. News follows no one's schedule and staying on top of it is really a never-ending job. Furthermore, reaching out to people you don't know and reporting on controversial issues isn't always fun. Beyond that, writing itself can be tedious to some. What makes it all worth it for me is the unmatched positive impact that journalism can have. In my opinion, nothing can point out issues in society and drive change like journalism can. Working for a publication like The Odyssey can help you figure out if the profession is really right for you.

5. You'll get to have a great time!

Many people get into writing because they love it. The Odyssey provides a chance for you to continue that passion, letting you focus on a fun and important part of college life.

So, apply!

With all these benefits, why not give The Odyssey a try? Applying online is easy on our website. You don't have to be Greek, and no experience is required. So give it a shot!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
