One of the hardest things about being an Acting major is the fact that almost everyone has something negative to say about it. They say I won't make any money. They say I won't do anything with my degree. They say I'm wasting my potential. They say it's an "easy" degree. I'm sure art majors in other disciplines have to deal with these same things that people say. But here's a little positivity to fight against that negativity; here's reasons why it's ok to be an art major.
1) You're Doing What You've Been Taught Your Whole Life
Ever since I was a little kid, my parents (and other adults!) told me I could do whatever I set my mind to. Funnily enough nobody ever said "you can do whatever you set your mind to unless it's an art major". So, why are people so negative, when we're just doing what they've been telling us the whole time? The real tragedy here is all the people who choose majors that they hate, just because they're more "practical".
2) There's More To Life Than Money
Sure, I might be doomed to a life waiting tables in between auditions, but at least I will be doing what I love. I will wake up in the morning and be excited to continue the pursuit of my dreams. Though it's generally agreed upon in our society that money isn't as important as love and kindness, people freak out when I tell them my major, because they see me as doomed to a life of poverty. Money doesn't buy happiness, but following your passion does.
3) It's Hard To Be An Art Major
You're not wasting your potential...being an art major is freaking difficult! Anyone who says otherwise ought to try being in my acting class for a week .I bet they would be singing quite a different tune...or reciting a different monologue....by the end. Art is incredibly demanding of artists. It might not involve lots of math and science (though it can!), but it still requires a lot of focus and a lot of hard work. Sure, many people join art majors because they think it'll be easy (giving us a bad rep), but they all drop out once they see just how tough an art major can be.
4) Art Gives You So Many More Skills

5) Happiness!
It all boils down to happiness. There's no better reason for being an art major then because it makes you happy. Do what you love, and you'll have no regrets!
