If you've been listening to the news lately, you might have heard that the GOP, after they attempt to repeal Obamacare, (Also known as the Affordable Care Act), they will move to strip Planned Parenthood of its federal funding. Now, regardless of your stance on abortions, it's super important that you understand all of the facts surrounding this situation, and that Planned Parenthood is an institution providing far more than abortions. Before you make a judgement, be armed with the facts. So, here are some facts about the institution, including some myths regarding it as well.
1. The federal funding that Paul Ryan is talking about does not, and can not, go towards providing abortions.
According to the Washington Post, "The group [Planned Parenthood] reported receiving $553 million in government funding in 2014, about half of its total revenue. Congress has barred federal funding for abortions since 1976, but health providers that offer abortions are eligible to use federal funds for other services." The services for which Planned Parenthood utilizes federal funds, by law, cannot include abortions. There are only a few rare exceptions, including danger to the mother's life or cases of rape.
2. Only three percent of the services Planned Parenthood provides are abortions.
The majority of its services include STD/STI treatment and testing, contraception, cancer screening, and more.
3. Nearly 79% of those utilizing Planned Parenthood for various services are at or below the federal poverty level.
These are not just rich women who could simply go to other locations for the same services.
4. Both men and women, not just women, benefit from Planned Parenthood's services.
Services for men include vasectomies, HIV tests, and LEEP procedures.
5. Videos showing Planned Parenthood officials involved in illegal fetal tissue sale have not been proven, and have since been discredited.
Investigations have found no proof that Planned Parenthood was selling or profiting off of illegal fetal tissue sale.
Please understand that this institution is important for many people who otherwise are unable to access healthcare procedures that they need. Before you bash Planned Parenthood or its services, understand what it has given to people and the multiple benefits that arise from its existence. There are always many layers to a story
