Having a basic wardrobe has its upside, but how do you know what classifies as a "staple" or different ways one item can be used? That's what I'm here to help with! This list isn't an exhaustive one, nor is it absolute. This is a look into my personal wardrobe, and how I dress with a tipped hat towards androgynous fashion.

Plain T-Shirts

Everyone needs a good plain t-shirt. White is an excellent staple because it can be worn with anything. It can be worn by itself with a pair of khaki chinos, or jeans, for a more casual look, or under a sweater or button down for layering. Having a collection in many colors you like will mean you always have at least one shirt for every mood or occasion.

Chinos

Having a quality pair of chinos is a must. Investing in a pair or two will save you time when you’re packing for a trip because they are simple and can be paired with a t-shirt and a roll at the ankles, or Oxford shoes and a button down for a more business-casual look. Getting chinos in a more eye-catching color like bright red, or khaki green can add personality to an otherwise boring outfit.

Patterned Button Downs

Vacation Dad-chic is very popular at the moment. Whether you’re into short sleeve button downs or long sleeve button downs, there are many options out there for you. Paired with a pair or black jeans or a basic khaki, it adds a pop of color to an outfit without too much fuss in the morning. I mean, who wouldn’t want to wear a shirt with airplanes or giraffes all over it?

Canvas Shoes

These are, in my opinion, the most versatile footwear. They look fine with your sweatpants or athletic shorts on a quick trip to the grocery store. They look good with jeans or chinos, and, if you’re so inclined to wear them, they dress down a dress. No pun intended. They can be worn with or without socks, and can be as basic or as patterned as you want.

Your choice of hat can tell a lot about your personality. Do you wear it front-facing, or backwards? What type of hat do you wear? How often do you wear them? If you are like me, I rarely wear hats, but it’s nice to have something to hide a bad hair day, or to throw on when you wake up late and are not able to fit in a shower before leaving. They can also be as casual or as formal as you would like.
