My Crazy Three Days To Start The School Year

My second year at The University of Iowa has come out to a very hectic and busy start for me.

To put in perspective of how crazy I'm writing this on only the third day of the school because I have had a personally crazy and hectic start to the school year. And no, it's not because I have had so many assignments to do already, many sequences of events have made my first three days in Iowa City Year Two rather zany to begin with.

It all started with the beginning of classes on Monday morning. Unfortunately, the sunshine wasn't present in Iowa City to greet the new students on the first day of classes this academic year. Rain poured down all around Iowa City on Monday morning, and with me not totally feeling back into the swing of things, I am not ready to go to my first day of classes until 40 minutes before my first class.

To add to the misfortunes of the torrential rain, my class is about a mile away from my residence hall. I'm already thinking to myself to just skip the class because it is just the first day of classes, and there is nothing that I will miss. But I am not a person who gives up easily on things. I decide to go out to the nearest Cambus stop, and hope that one of the University's complimentary buses shows up to get me to my class on time. A minute later, my friends Emily and Nick see me, and they ask me if I need a ride to get to anywhere.

Of course, I take full advantage of this opportunity, and hop on in with Nick and Emily, believing they will get me to where I need to be. Well, that didn't happen, because they had to park their car at the student union parking garage about maybe half a mile away from my first class and walk in the pouring rain. I'm now thinking to just get breakfast or something for myself and just skip the first day of classes.

However, since I do consider myself a dedicated student, I refused to skip the first day of class, and walked all the way over there anyways.

Well, I may actually be glad I chose to go to my first class years from now. My first course on Monday was a course required for my intended major, Sport And Recreation Management. While sitting in the lecture, the professor, who also happens to be a big aficionado on placing students in his major in various careers in the sport industry informs the class of an opportunity to meet with sports executives this week.

If we went down to the Field House tomorrow morning, we could sign ourselves up for a trip to Indianapolis happening this weekend, where SRM students could meet with executives of Indianapolis sports teams, and start building connections to people in the sports world.

This year, I am hoping that I can develop myself in my classes and student organizations, maybe even an on-campus job down the line, to the point where I can feel more prepared to kickstart my career in the sports industry within the next two years by acquiring both the knowledge and skills that employers may look at that will set me apart from the other candidates. So I knew I had to sign myself up for this trip.

But my story about my crazy first three days is far from over. I got to the Field House early enough so I could secure a spot on this trip happening tomorrow. Little did I know how unprepared I was for my first trip out to meet with sports executives. On my trip itinerary, the dress code called for formal dress gear, which included a suit and tie. Well, I forgot to pack a shirt to go with my suit along with fancy dress shoes for an event like this. Needless to say, I was forced to run out to Target out in Coralville Mall a few miles away from campus to pick up the proper gear.

I had looked around Target for a nice pair of dress shoes and a shirt to go underneath my suit, but I could find nothing that I thought was of good quality there. So, I was then forced to drive to Kohl's. While I did find my shoes and shirt there, it took me quite a while to figure it all out.

That was due to many shirts having sizes similar to mine, and not being able to find my shirt size. I had to keep texting my mom if it was one size or dimension above or below me, would it fit? My mom kept being kind of pushy on it all, and I really didn't know how to feel about this. But, I finally found my exact size after looking all around one of the dress shirts piles. With my shoes and shirt now secured, I was still missing snacks for both the trip and my dorm room. So after spending around 1.5-2 hours looking for clothes, I had to run out to HyVee in Iowa City to pick up a few groceries for myself.

I picked up a box of donuts, a few packs of gum, and a couple of boxes of granola bars for myself. But along with that came two pints of Ben And Jerry's Ice Cream. I knew that would be a bold move, because I was going to have to drive out to the Hawk Lot, where students can park their cars when they are not using them, and then get on a Cambus, have my friend Mike drive me back, or walk all the way to my dorm room on the other side of campus. But on my way to the Hawk Lot, I get pulled over by the Iowa City Police.

I have no idea why on Earth I am getting pulled over. I wasn't drinking or anything last night, so it was very mysterious to me why I was getting pulled over. I step outside of my car briefly, until the police officer tells me to remain in my vehicle. I remain in the car, and the police officer tells me that I was driving without my lights on.

I totally thought I had them on, but the police officer showed me that I didn't have my tailgate lights on. I do get asked to present my driver's license and registration. I do present him my driver's license, but I just did not know where my vehicle registration was. I pull out a few things from my glove box and ask the police officer if that was my registration, and none of those items were my registration.

Thankfully, the police officer was somehow able to look up details about my vehicle, and was able to confirm that I had proper registration. I went off without a ticket, but I was issued a warning that I had to check to make sure that my lights were on when I'm driving at night. I had never done that before in my car, so I was definitely surprised that it had happened.

Now, here we are today. I spontaneously decided to walk into my academic advisor's office to talk about if it was a good idea to drop a course I thought might be too demanding for me this semester. Not only did I drop that course, but I also changed my lab science course, after mentioning to my advisor that I had a ton of difficulty with the first lab yesterday. My advisor pulled out a rabbit out of the hat, and found another lab science course that still had an open seat in it, and the lecture was beginning in 30 minutes. Sure enough, I agree to change my lab science courses. But that didn't go a lot better. The lecturer in this lab science course was not providing notes with a lot of words on it for the class, and was mostly talking and pictures. This was not helpful for me, because I prefer instructors who use notes with words on it instead of pictures and all talking. About an hour after that class was over, my academic advisor pulls another rabbit out of the hat, and finds yet another lab science course that she says I would do better in than the other two, and somehow, it still could fit into my schedule AND had available seats. So twice in one day, I changed my lab science course. However, this has led to a ton of confusion for me, because I still have not adopted a set schedule because of all of the change. On top of that, I now have no syllabus, and no textbooks that may be required for the most recent lab science course I decided to put myself in. And it's going to get so hectic because I still have to email my instructors in my new lab science course informing them that I will be out of town for the next lecture for the SRM field trip and need to know what textbooks and anything else I need to order online as soon as I can.

Now, I still have quite a busy night ahead of me in which I have to complete a few introductory assignments and readings, a couple of emails, and on top of that, a lot of packing to do for my sudden trip to Indianapolis beginning early tomorrow morning. I am only hoping that I do not oversleep for the bus ride tomorrow. If that happens, I don't know how on earth I would describe this first week.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
