I recently stole a job at Kroger this past week and it has been a great experience so far. There are always down falls when it comes to jobs but for the most part it hasn't been too bad. Once you get a job you start to appreciate things more and see things from a different perspective, or so I have noticed. I have learned a few things from my first week at my first (actually second) job and they need to be shared.
1. Appreciation.
Once you start working, you will start to appreciate everything more. Whether it be five dollars, a cheap sandwich from the gas station or even sitting down. As a courtesy clerk, I am standing all day, going from check lane to check lane, and you start to get really tired and just want to sit. Unfortunately, you cant just sit down when you're tired, you have to wait until it's your break or when you sit in your car to go home. you'll start to remember all those times you had to sit in a classroom all day and start to appreciate small things like that.
2. New people.
I've had the same friend group for as long as I can remember and I have been going to the same school with the same people for quite some time now. Therefore, I haven't really tried to make new friends because I don't like change. Now that I have started working, I'm meeting new people and having enjoyable conversations with people even from my high school that I never thought I would ever talk to.
3. Adulting.
I am the youngest person who works at the store, and I sometimes get things like "wait how old are you?" and "you're a baby compared to everyone else." But having a job makes me feel a little less insecure about my age and opening up a checking and savings account will help with that. I opened my first bank account the other day, and I was ecstatic. Being able to earn money that you worked for is truly a great feeling. Even if it isn't as much as you would like or expecting, that feeling of accomplishment is wonderful.
4. Positivity.
Since I am a courtesy clerk, I am the last person the customer sees. Sometimes they will help bag the groceries, organize them to help me out or wait patiently as my slow poke, newby self bags all their groceries. My favorite part about my job is getting to say goodbye to the customers. That may sound a little weird, but saying a nice genuine comment like “have a nice day” with a smile on your face can actually make you feel a little more positive. Another thing that can make you feel even more positive is when they say “you have a good day as well." Simple comments like that are what I love about my job, it brings just a little more positivity into my life.
