While the first semester of college may be a cliché topic every fall and winter, it is a topic I felt the need to write about and there was no way more fitting to explain myself than through rap.
All Eyez on Me – 2Pac
Move-in Day for most freshmen is a big deal. It signifies not only no longer living with your parents and a new beginning, but also the pressure to succeed. Like 2Pac, everyone expects you to do well and you then come to the conclusion that there is no option for failure. This is the time to make things happen and take control of the rest of your life.
Midnight Marauders – A Tribe Called Quest
After a couple weeks of being in college, a weekend arises and there are numerous events going on around campus. You go out, have fun, and seemingly always end up at Manhattan Subs eating a foot-long Steak and Cheese sandwich with no mayo. The world is yours and you rule it. You can go out whenever you want, for however long you want, and do whatever you want. The Tribe’s third album title perfectly encapsulates students’ late night adventures.
808s and Heartbreak – Kanye West
A student’s first semester at college is arguably the most influential time of their life. High school relationships end, students develop homesickness, people don’t make many friends, etc. It can be a make-or-break time for a student and emotions are often on full blast. Nothing more true can be said for Ye’s fourth album as well. 808s and Heartbreak was the first time the emotionless West opened up about his feelings, primarily regarding his mother’s death and his split from his fiancée.
Ready to Die – Notorious B.I.G.
While not meant literally, Biggie’s debut album title is what all students come to terms with in the weeks preceding finals. There is only so much preparation that can be done before a student gives up and accepts the fact that they will not start out college with a 4.0 GPA. While an eerie prediction, the album also resonates with students about tough times and acceptance of whatever may happen.
College Dropout – Kanye West
During finals week, everyone feels as if they should take advice from the title of Ye’s debut album. Luckily, afterward comes break and that means a long period of relaxation. Following the break, students come back to school rejuvenated and prepare themselves for the second semester.
Get Rich or Die Tryin’ – 50 Cent
The title of 50 Cent’s debut album accurately describes students’ attitudes during winter break, with bank accounts having been run dry by the first semester. At this point, everyone is saving up as much money so that they can afford “luxuries” the second semester, such as shakes, subs, and smoothies.
It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back - Public Enemy
With everyone returning to school for the second semester, it signifies a new start. GPAs can be salvaged, there are more opportunities to meet people, and there is the return of Fried Chicken Wednesday. As confidence levels rise regarding the upcoming semester, Public Enemy’s 1988 album describes student’s attitudes.
