First month in college Reflection

Oh how great it feels to be a Vol

First month in college Reflection
Hanna Akpan

Hey guys! It’s been awhile since I have written anything. That’s probably because I have been busy going through my first month of college at UTK and I got to say it’s been a very interesting month. So I thought why not tell you guys about it.

1)They don’t lie when they say 30,000 people go here.

Coming to UTK, wasn’t that big of a change to me since I went to a high school with 3,000 people attending it, but when you times that number by 10, you can imagine how crazy it could seem to little freshman me. But in a way, I like that everyday I’m not seeing the same people on my walks to classes or on pedestrian walkway. It’s a new change and I’m a person who likes change.

2)They don’t lie when they say your professor probably doesn’t know your name.

I remember on my first day of my geology 101 class it was crazy to see how big the lecture room was and that’s when I realized if I want my professor to know who I am; I was going to have to make myself stand out.

3)They don’t lie when they say you probably will be broke 98% of the time you’re in college.

It’s not that you’re broke. It just means your money needs to be saved and spent wisely which can be hard at 2 in the morning when you’re craving cookout and want to go and get it. But college is the place where you figure out how to manage your financials, so you don’t live the rest of your life in debt.

4)They don’t lie when they say the people you think you’ll end up being tight with might just stab you in the back.

I have learned that you can be nice and sweet and loving to people, and they still will stab you in the back without thinking twice. College has made me realized that you can’t always tell your business to people who probably will the second you guys stop talking go tell John, Kevin, Becky, Susie, etc. So you just have to be careful who you tell things too.

5)They don’t lie when they say it’s so easy to get comfort with people you always hangout with.

I’m not saying I don’t love the friends I have now because trust me they are great people and really care about me. But I haven’t met that person I just vibe with and I think it’s my fault for that because I should put myself out there more and try and meet new people. College is the place you meet your long-lasting friendship and hopefully this month I can put myself out there more and really connect with people.

So far college has been a wild adventure and I’m excited to see what is in store for the following few months. I don’t know when is the next time I will be posting on this platform, but I want to tell you guys thanks for sticking around if you have been reading my posts.

With all my love,

HA

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
