I’m sure you’ve seen the news that the FBI Director, James Comey, was just relieved of duty effective immediately on May 9, 2017. The dismissal of one of the nation’s highest ranking law enforcement officials comes as a shock considering the fact that he was heading the investigation into the alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. In Trump’s dismissal, he states that it is because oh how he handled the Clinton investigation but is that the real reason behind the decision to fire Mr. Comey? Only time will tell. But for now, it looks like a cover up.
Quick history lesson: Richard Nixon, the 37th President of the United States, played the game first – and lost. Nixon, like Trump, also fired the person that headed the investigation that would have revealed wrongdoing. Congress began impeachment hearings, which ultimately led to his resignation. Nixon lost a large amount of support from his party – but that doesn’t seem to be the same for Trump.
I’m not assuming or implying that something questionable is happening between the current administration and Russia, but it sure looks like it. It is true that the President can hire and fire whomever he or she pleases because the cabinet serves at their pleasure.
Mr. Comey, after many congressional hearings, became more of a bipartisan punching bag instead of the Director of the FBI. He was criticized every step of the way during both the Clinton investigation and the Russia investigation.
With that being said, what should happen next? I recommend that the Trump administration swiftly appoint a new FBI Director. Some of the names being floated for the position are Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, Sheriff David Clarke of Milwaukee County, Wisconsin, former Mayor of New York City Rudy Giuliani, and Congressman Trey Gowdy of South Carolina. I would've recommended Mr. Gowdy to be the next Director of the FBI, but he has since withdrawn his own name from the running.
Mr. Comey has already declined an invitation from Congress to testify as to the status of the Russia investigation before his departure. But top democrats and many republicans will be pushing hard to get an appearance from him. Now we can only wonder what, if anything, will happen next.
