To my surprise, I still manage to get emails from readers to request topics for future articles, and this week I decided to go ahead and take on one of those requests. For the record, I still have no idea where I stand when it comes to this topic, but I am gonna write about it regardless.
So let's talk about the good ole "finstas." For my older readers out there, finstagrams, or as the millennial generation calls it, "finstas", are fake Instagram accounts a user creates to post the things they wouldn't normally post on their own accounts. This movement has been dominated by women, but you might find the occasional dude that has one. Finstas have been a thing since Instagram was introduced, and this movement is probably not going away for a while.
Alright, so I am going to come out and say it. I really don't care if someone has a finsta or not. Being 21, a senior in college, and also being apart of a Greek Organization, a good amount of people I have on the good ole IG have a finsta and use it pretty regularly. Parents, if you're one of the minority that follows their kid on Instagram, good luck trying to find their finsta. It's usually under some weird username you would never think of looking up, plus there is a good solid chance your kid's finsta is on private and they wouldn't accept your request anyways.
Now we go to the real question, why do people, especially females, make finstas? There's a number of reasons, but I believe the reason people make them is because it's an outlet. Documenting life's inappropriate memories not meant to be seen except for the trusted few. Drug use, sexual conquests, cyberbullying, etc, it's all on the finstas. However, not all of it is inappropriate or negative, sometimes it can be used as a call for help for love and support, uplifting or motivational posts, or just posting to stay relevant. The finstagram has shown different uses over the years.
So what's my take on the finstagram movement? Honestly, do whatever you want. I have multiple friends that have finstas and it's actually entertaining to see the posts they make on them. Some of the posts can be dark and depressing, other times it's so positive and uplifting; it varies. However, I have finally come to the realization why they are still relevant. Finstas are essentially another outlet for people that need to get something off their chest and share it with someone, and that's perfectly fine.
You read my viewpoint, if you have a finsta, great, keep using it, and if you're in Greek Life, I hope you don't get sent to Standards because of it. If you don't have one, don't judge other people for having it, because you don't know what they're going through, and it probably doesn't even affect your life anyways.
