Finding your place in college can be tough; especially when you only know a few people when you get there. I personally struggled with this my freshman year and that worried me a lot but I can honestly say that this year has shown me that things can turn around when you least expect them to.
Everyone knows that you go to college for an education, but that is certainly not all you gain from it. The social scene at a university is an important aspect of your everyday life and without it, you can start to feel lonely. Feeling lonely when you are surrounded by 35,000 people, all of about the same age can be scary. That was me last year. Sure, I had a small group of friends, but I still felt like I had nobody to turn to when things got hard.
Thankfully, I have a feeling this year and the years following will be so much better. Just in the first month and a half, school has felt more like a home than just a school. I have built stronger relationships with those around me and know that there will be more to come. Friendships have come easier now that I have stopped trying to force them and have started to let them evolve on their own. Because of this, I have become a happier person all around. Classes have become less stressful, dinners have become filled with conversation, and my face has felt more genuine smiles.
To anyone who is currently struggling with the same situation that I was in last school year, you can do it. Be yourself, have fun, and the rest will come on its own with time.
