Have you ever seen a movie that sends awful messages to kids, teenagers and adults? There are many inappropriate movies, and TV shows for that matter, that do this. Yet, there has been a break from the norm. “Finding Dory,” the sequel to “Finding Nemo,” came out on June 17th, 2016. There’s been a lot of hype over this movie. Many kids born in the 90s, who are now young adults, ran to the movie theater to see “Finding Dory” since “Finding Nemo” was a childhood classic. Let’s just say, you would not want to go to the theater when it was the first day this movie was out. And if you did, I’m sorry.
“Finding Dory” is about the main character Dory, played by the ever famous Ellen DeGeneres, going on an adventure to find her parents. The reason why she does not find her parents right away is because Dory forgets many names and places along the way. She suffers from short-term memory loss. Dory receives help from some friends, but if she did not have a bad memory, she would have found her parents within 30 minutes! Yes, that’s an estimation. Yet, her disability provides humor to the audience. It lightens the mood.
Dory faces many difficult challenges on her trip to visit her parents. This is where perseverance comes in. She gets put into an aquarium, is told that her parents are dead, and gets separated from Nemo and Nemo’s dad, among others. Yet, Dory does not quit searching for her parents. She wants to at points, but she perseveres. In the end, Dory is successful! Her journey was not for nothing. Dory sees her parents, who she hasn’t seen since she was a young child. This movie shows that it’s worth it to persevere. That’s a great message to get across. I know that I’ve had to persevere a lot in my lifetime. Whenever I do, I’m always grateful that I did.
In “Finding Dory,” Dory misses her parents, which is to be expected. This plot emphasizes the importance of family. Dory did not have to go on this trek to find her parents but did it because she wanted to. She cares about her family a tremendous amount. The fact that Dory cared enough for her family to risk her life shows how brave she is and how she values family. “Finding Dory” sends this positive message: Family is vital. Family is so important. I don’t know what I would do without mine. My family is incredible!
While “Finding Dory” is a Disney movie, which often get criticized for being too corny, it is one that sends a powerful message. Sometimes, Disney movies send bad messages, such as women have to ask the guy to a dance or that women need men to be happy. When children see these movies, they are, from a young age, of the mindset that they are not powerful on their own, that they’re not good enough. That’s why I love “Finding Dory.” This movie sends a signal to young children that they can go on an adventure, persevere and be independent while doing great things. Keep that innocent spirit that Dory has and be yourself. Go see “Finding Dory” because it’s a wonderful movie that teaches people of all ages to persevere and to love your family. Go ahead, treat yourself to “Finding Dory.”
