Finals Week, As Told By UCM Students

How bad is it really?

Finals Week, As Told By UCM Students

As college students tip-toe into finals week, we cross our fingers as we search for the truth behind "April Showers Bring May Flowers." I will spend time searching for the flowers, because April showers consisted of: Late nights at the lib, several Vanilla Lates from Einstein's, calls to Mom, and early mornings to get a little extra studying in before class. As I fought my way through April, I was curious how my peers felt about this time of year and specifically finals week. I asked fifteen, random people around campus two questions: What is one sentence to describe your feelings going into finals week? and If there is a movie character or scene to describe your feelings about finals, who/what is it? I include the student's name, the gif of their character, and their sentence right under the gif.

1.Jessica Miller

"I am excited for the school year to be over, but nervous because I want to pass."

She chose the minions because they are excited little creatures. As the end of the week grows nearer, Jessica will share their excitment!

2. Alyssa Durrill

"I am excited for the year to be over, but stressed about all of the studying."

Similar to Jessica, a lot of students seem to have ambivalent feelings about what is to come. However, Alyssa seems to be more preoccupied by the studying than the thoughts of the end. She chose the sadness character from the movie "Inside Out."

3. Jeremiah Barnes

"It's overrated."

Jeremiah said he has never hard a hard final throughout school, so it does not worry him too much. He could not think of a character, but I give him a thumbs up for the confidence. Lucky guy.

4. Dominic Bass

"It won't be too bad."

When I asked Dominic about which character represented him, he said, "Someone very laid back. "The Big Lebowski"! He's always in his robe, not giving a f***!"

5. Matt Butler

"May the odds be ever in your favor."

After hearing his initial sentence, I assumed Matt would choose a Hunger Games character to describe him. I questioned him when he said Pinocchio and he admitted, "Most of the time, I bullsh*t my way through papers. My teachers always know."

6. Alex Mauer

"Coffee overdose."

Enough said, girl.

7. Joe Collins

"It's not as hard as it's made out to be."

Joe feels so nonchalant about finals week, he could skip it like Ferris Bueller.

8. James Stokes

"I am very thankful it is my last week of school."

I found out James is a senior, so this is truly his last week! I hope you get through it, James, regardless of the "stress level of Marty McFly!"

9. Hope Sherman

"Yep, I'm worried."

10. Tyler Cooper

"Stressed."

I asked, "That's it?" He said, "That's it."

11. Micayla Murphy

"I just want to get this over with."

Micayla said she felt like Dr.O'Malley heading into the intern exam. I am sure all of you Grey's Anatomy lovers can relate.

12. Audrey Zoog

"This semester I am not as worried as usual."

When talking to Audrey, she quoted Princess Bride: "Never go against the sicilian when death is on the line!"

13. Mikala Modiri

"I have a few (finals weeks) under my belt, so I am more confident than before. But I'm still nervous!"

As a Sophomore, Mikala has a experience with testing, how to handle stress, and the last week of the school year. Do your best and let it go, right?

14. Austan Jones

"I feel excited and overwhelmed at the same time."

*He recommended staying away from naps no matter how bad you want one.*

15. Wyatt Bulk

"Risk it for the biscuit."

Wyatt said taking on finals week was much like taking on a battle: You must risk it to get the biscuit!

Obviously students at the University of Central Missouri are experiencing different emotions about finals week. However, I believe I speak for every student when I say I am excited to put a school year in the books. Let's finish strong!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
