Finals Week Doesn't Define You

Your identity is found in Christ - not just your grades.

From a young age, it's engrained in our minds that our identity rests within worldly things - sports, fashion, relationships, education. Sure, these things are of some importance, but they don't define who we are. You are not a sports team, or an article of clothing. You are not the relationship with your significant other, and, above all else, you are not your grades.

Don't get me wrong, I highly value my education and care about my grades (especially being the child of an educator). However, the thing is that maybe I care about my grades too much. I often catch myself comparing my worth to my GPA and the grades I make in the classroom... This wasn't something I worried about in high school. I could miss a week of class then, catch up in a day, and still finish the semester with an A. But if I miss two days of class in college, my grade has dropped from an A to G (don't worry, Dad. A "G" isn't really a thing you can get in college).

I'm so terrified of doing bad in a class within my major this semester that I'm putting off preparation. That's not how things should go. I shouldn't be ridden with such painful anxiety over classes that I'm physically sick to my stomach... that I've had a stress-induced migraine for three days simply from thinking about all of the things I have to do and the things that ride on me passing all of my classes this semester. In all honesty, if the worst thing that happens to me this week is not doing well on a test, then I'd say I'm pretty lucky in comparison to what it could be.

I know that a lot of us are stressed right now as finals lurk ahead with glowing eyes. We just have to remember that our identity does not rest within our grades. Sure, they're important. But they're only important right now. Our grades our temporary in comparison to the things God has planned for us. Our identities should not rely on our GPAs, but instead in Christ and Christ alone. You are not your grades. You are not your major. You are a son/daughter of God. He will still love you if you don't do well on a test or don't pass a class. It's okay. We are not our "failures"

Find peace in the Lord during this stressful week. It's the last stretch. I promise you, God's got this, even if you don't (and in knowing that, yes, you should study).

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
