Growing up, my parents would occasionally watch the medical television show "Scrubs". From 2001-2010, it chronicled the lives of newbie doctors navigating life in a real world hospital. This show stood out in many ways. For one, it had a medical backdrop, but was not considered a "drama". There was music, heavy comedy and interestingly refreshing characters.
I rediscovered this show recently on Netflix, as I was looking for an outlet during this crazy crunch time in college. As I fell back in love with the storyline, one part of the show in particular stood out to me: the janitor, played by Neil Flynn. He is offbeat, rude and overall strange. But, I found that some of his witty lines and antics fit in perfectly with the emotional state of these last few weeks of college.
For your enjoyment, I have picked out a few that I think are particularly relatable:
When you're afraid to think outside the box
"The point is this. If you wanna be different, then be different."
Finals time is beyond stressful, and because of this people tend to be afraid to take risks or do something a little out of the ordinary. Don't worry so much. Take on what you can handle, and don't hesitate to put your own twist on it.
When you get a little cynical
"You seem unhappy. I like that."
If you are at all familiar with "Scrubs", you'll know that the janitor is the most negative person on the show. When we are under a ton of pressure, this negative nature can sneak up on us and we find ourselves having a difficult time staying positive. Keep yourself in check, and try to spread some extra happiness instead.
When you forget how to do simple tasks
"Fork. Me can't eat soup."
At this point in the year, our brains are fried. We are on overload, and it's difficult to remember to do things like eat and sleep when we are drowning in your studies. Don't forget to take care of yourself. Your body and mind will thank you when it's all over.
When you lose track of time
"You will not ruin my Christmas, not again, not this year."
"I've only worked here for three months."
When you've been cooped up for hours in the dimly-lit library with only your textbooks to keep you company, it's completely understandable that time becomes obsolete. But, it's important to take breaks; your mind needs the rest and so does your mental clock for that matter.
When everything else falls to the wayside
"She said, 'Time spent wishing is time wasted.'"
Hopes and dreams? What hopes and dreams? I'm just trying to get through my finals! Good luck, everyone!
