Finals week is done! I don't know about you, but by the time that I've finished writing 5 final projects, reviewed a semester's worth of information, and gotten a cumulative 4 hours of sleep in one week, I'm ready to head home. But being home in the middle of the winter will get old really quick, Trust me, I'm from Syracuse, one of the snowiest cities in the United States. Instead of binge watching every show that Netflix has to offer, here are a few things to fight off the winter break blues.
1. Play In The Snow!
You are never too old to play in the snow. Build a snowman and make snow angels! Let's be truthful here, everyone likes a good snowball fight. Nothing beats the winter break blues better than rolling around in a freshly fallen bed of snow.
2. Find A Hill
If you need a little more structure in your winter activities then there tons of things to do. Learn to snowboard, ski, or, if you lack any sense of balance, go sledding! Have you ever tried tubing? It's the perfect combination of tubing behind a boat and downhill sledding.
3. Ice Skating
Are you uncomfortable going downhill at high speeds? Not to worry, ice skating is perfectly flat. Whether you're a beginner or advanced, ice skating is fun. Just make sure that you don't fall and hit your head. The last time that it happened to me I found out that most ice rinks don't have ice for that.
4. Get Active
Want to get active before you break your New Year's resolution to go to the gym every day? Well you're in luck, gyms don't close just because its cold outside. Get fit before summer rolls around and you realize that your body isn't swimsuit ready. Are you more of the outdoors type? Cross-country skiing is surprisingly fun, or you might try snowshoeing! Many of the trails that you can hike on during the summer and fall are open. Trust me, its a completely different experience seeing these trails covered in snow and ice.
5. Games!
When is the last time that you played a board game? Stop destroying your eyes by staring at the screens of every piece of technology that you own. Get your family and/or friends together and play some games! What in this world is more fun than someone acting like they just lost their life savings after losing some monopoly money?
6. Read
Hey, books still exist! Contrary to public belief, they are so much better than a movie can ever be. "Harry Potter," "Lord of the Rings," "Hunger Games"--the books were better. Pretty much any question that you have about these movies has been answered in the books. Instead of scrolling through what other people are doing on social media, immerse yourself in a good book!
7. Work? .
I know that this is your winter break and that you shouldn't have to do any work, but maybe a job is just what you need! It adds a little structure and scheduling to your otherwise chaotic vacation. And, in the words of my Dad, " Stinks while your working, but its great when you get your paycheck. It's a decision that you won't regret when you come back to college in the spring and you're the only one of your friends who still has money half way through the semester
8. Take A Class
While it's easier to try and forget college during vacation, a January Semester class may be just what you need to put you ahead. Getting a class out of the way while on vacation is a great way to make sure that you're not overloaded during the semester.
9. Cook Something
If you can manage to shovel yourself out of your drive way then you can go out and buy ingredients to cook something that you've never made before. Not only can you take a break from cafeteria food and easy mac, but you also get to make whatever you're in the mood for!
10. Movie Marathon
I know that I've bashed depending on technology for entertainment, but this is my exception to that rule. Pick your favorite movie series, get some friends, and watch them all! I've done "Lord of the Rings," "Pirates of the Caribbean," "Star Wars," and "Back to the Future." Pick your favorites and start watching!
11. Volunteer
You may think that you have it bad, stuck in your warm house with nothing to do but eat and watch TV, but there are so many people who have it so much worse. How about you stop complaining to everyone about whose fault it is that we have poverty, or mistreatment, in the world and go out to make a positive change in your community. Operation Christmas Child sends boxes full of presents out to children who wouldn't normally get gifts. You would be shocked at how much nursing home communities appreciate just having someone to talk to. Don't complain about your boredom, go out and volunteer! It is incredibly rewarding!
