There is no more time for tears; we must think of revenge now. The time for skepticism is now. There is no more room to be shocked, dismayed, or offended. The chances of the electoral college not voting Trump into the presidency are miniscule. If by some strange twist of fate Trump is not inaugurated come January 20th, then this article will have no meaning.
As it stands, Trump will be sitting in the Oval Office and the people he’s been tapping will head our government agencies. This is a problem. Here are some of Trump’s cabinet picks that will help his campaign promises become realities. One of the largest points Trump made during his campaign was that he would place Washington outsiders, people who would reflect his constituents, also assuring the American public that he would be a president for all Americans. The reality is that Trump’s picks are largely: wealthy individuals involved in corporate business, white, and male. Most picks are extremely conservative which is to be expected but this incoming administration seems to aspire to break new heights.
The Southern Poverty Law Center has called Stephen Brannon’s far right website, "Breitbart," a “white ethno-nationalist propaganda mill.” Brannon being eyed for a spot in Trump administration reflects a growing part of our society. The “Alt-Right,” who call themselves white nationalists, deplore it when people call them racists and white supremacists. Most people reading this can probably assume that people realize this is just a formality of denying racism, but if we have learned anything this year it doesn't matter if what they say is true or not; people will believe it because they want to believe it.
All the fact checking in the world did not prove Trump’s words untrue in the ears of his devoted supporters during the debates and campaign. Going forward, we as the generation that is going to have to carry the burden of our parents' mistakes, have an even greater responsibility to realize that this will be an administration that gained its position appealing to half-truths, stereotypes, propaganda, displaced anger, and a need to find some greater scapegoat. It is spoken that millennials are famous for our apathy. Stop saying that this isn’t your America because it is, and you can be ashamed about that and we can also decide to be the generation that will not give this administration the chance to marginalize, attack, deport, and blame our friends.
Our friends who are minorities, LGBT, Muslim, or anyone that Trump and his electorate hate because we don’t look or act the way they do are our family. We can not allow our family to be torn apart by people who have made it a tradition in this country to put us down. We have the advantage! Trump has lost the popular vote and by a record-breaking amount, something that frustrates him, and we have to remind his administration about that.
We did not elect him president; we see him for what he and his cabinet really are. We know who we are, and we deserve to live in an America that we can be proud of, but the burden of changing this world is falling very heavily on us.
