Fifth Harmony has blown the world out of the water with its new hit single, “Work From Home", which dropped last Friday in the early hours of the morning. Fans awoke to not only a new track from a major group, but also a video to accompany the new track.
Fifth Harmony is a group of five women who won "X Factor's" second season in the summer of 2012. Since then, they began their journey doing mall appearances and small events across the country before dropping their debut album, “Reflection." Following the success of selling this record, they went on the “Reflection Tour” in 2015 and were a major hit. They appeared on major television shows including "Ellen", "Kelly and Michael", "The Today Show" and "The Late Late Show with James Corden", among others. They also have performed at the MTV Video Music Awards, the Latin Grammy Awards and are set to perform this week on "Kelly and Michael" once again.
After what seems like an eternity, although, only about a year and a half, the group is releasing their second album titled “7/27". This number set represents the date the group was formed on "X Factor" in 2015: July 27. The symbolism behind the album is real, and it should be. There have been rumors for months now that the group was breaking up, although all rumors have been disproved.
Camila Cabello, one of the lead members of the group, has had her own personal success with her single “I Know What You Did Last Summer” with teenage star Shawn Mendes, fueling the break-up rumors. Lauren Jauregui was rumored to be upset with being in a group and wanted to freelance on her own — does Zayn Malik ring a bell? — but she too disproved these rumors.
The group was so fed up with the gossip they posted selfies and videos of themselves with all members of the group in the studio or hanging out, quashing any break-up flames like a heavy-duty fire extinguisher. Everything seems right in the world now, however, as the world has the absolute blessing to hear “Work From Home”.
The first song off of their new album, “Work From Home” is a new sound, a new subject material and a new collaboration from the group. Ty Dolla $ign — it always kills me what rappers choose for stage names — joins the ladies on this catchy new tune, and the music video is stunning. Set on a construction site, the women belt out their individual parts in work boots and tool belts, really soaking up the theme of the video.
When I first heard the song, I was instantly surprised by the style and lyrics. There are underlying tones and messages that you may want to read between the lines for, or simply listen more than once. The style is incredibly catchy, a mix of pop and some hip-hop, and even has some island quality to it. I was pleased to see the group switch up the chorus and the verse from who usually sings many songs, Camila Cabello, to focusing more on Lauren Jauregui and Ally Brooke. All of the women are incredibly talented, but Jauregui was somewhat slighted in the last album with a smaller role when she should be shining in front and belting out her deeper, raspy register.
As for the rest of the group, Dinah Jane and Normani Kordei, the dancing was spot on and the awe and wow factor are incredibly present in the video. Ty Dolla $ign does a fine job as well, walking around in overalls and holding a hammer as he raps his minuscule part in a smash hit by this group of ladies. All in all, I expect big things for these songs simply based on how many views the video had on Vevo as of Friday.
Fans will have to wait until May 20, 2016 for the album to come out. Fear not, however, you can listen to “Work From Home” on blast until then and hopefully another single or two will drop to keep those anxious fans at bay.
